Lively Langley : Lots new goin' on (but still some old)

Road Work Ahead, Langley
Sidewalks, or walkways as they are called nowadays, are being installed from the new Island County Fire District 3 station on Camano Avenue at the entrance to Langley. Sue Frause photos.

First Street, Langley
These buildings, which housed Virginia's Antiques and Wayward Son, are being rehabbed by their owners. Virginia LaRue moved down the block and Wayward Son's Sandy Wainwright across the street.

Anthes Street, Langley
More new sidewalks (walkways) for Langley, these on Anthes Street.

225 Anthes, Langley
This isn't an outdoor cinema, but 225 Anthes. It will house four "high end" condos and three "quaint" retail spaces. Completion this winter.

Langley's First Street, Whidbey Island
Angle parking on the water side of First Street magically replaced the more visually friendly parallel parking that had been in place for years. Eleven new spaces have been added. The change has been controversial. My vote? I'd rather look at the buildings than the hind ends of big honkin' vehicles. Not to mention the feng shui factor!

Fossek's Field, Langley
Fossek's Field on Sixth Street has looked the same for years.

Whew, your last picture put my mind at ease....good to know some things don't change.

Construction is always going on somewhere around here, too....2 road construction sites on the way to my yoga lesson this morning and 1 more on a different route home. Homes popping up here and there....and 3 new huge condo complexes within one mile are rapidly filling up...sigh. I'm all for progress, but not if it changes the atmosphere radically.

Yes, it's all about the change. And what we have in common, whether it's Japan where you're writing from or Whidbey Island where I'm at, is the change factor. It makes me wonder about the people on the street saying, "Spare change?"

Wow, isn't it great that our MIddle School children will have SAFE sidewalks to get to school next year, isn't it terrific that these same sidewalks will connect to our new Firehouse which will house sleeping accommodations for 24/7 fire & rescue support to make our town safer, and isn't it fantastic that these sidewalks connect to a brand new commuter park & ride so that Langley-ites can be more GREEN, isn't it wonderful that these we've added MORE parking on First St. to allow more patron to shop at LOCAL Mom & Pop businesses to help the merchants in Langley get through these difficult economic times. This RESPONSIBLE DEVELOPMENT FOR THE HEALTH, SAFTEY AND BENEFIT OF ALL LANGLEY.

Some people grumble that Langley's getting too gentrified, what with the sidewalks and all. Huh? The more people that get out of their cars and walk or bike make it a much more people-friendly community. It's hard to say "Good Morning!" to somebody as they're whizzing by in their Hummer while yakking on their cell phone. I'll be curious to see what happens to the current Langley Fire Station on Second Street. There's plenty of buzz about it!

Sue I can't tell if the above writer is being sincere
or just goofing with us.
While concrete has its place it is a shame that Langley trees are being destroyed to make way for it.
The illegal Fire Station/Park & Ride project has finally caught the attention of City Hall.

Thanks for that link. As far as the writer being sincere, I think he/she was semi-scolding me for the tone of my blog about all the changes in Langley. I don't think the comment was goofing with us nor do I think the tree is of utmost importance in his/her mind. Sometimes it's tough reading between the lines of anonymous blog comments.
