Young Frankenstein "officially" opens in Seattle next week.
Photos by Sue Frause.
As far as I know, there were at least six Whidbey Islanders in the audience for last night's preview performance of Young Frankenstein at The Parmount Theater in Seattle.
I don't know about the couple up in the balcony, we never saw them.
But the four of us gave it mixed reviews: two liked it and the other two not so much.
I'm part of the latter duo.
As somebody who doesn't remember if I saw the entire film or not, I'm obviously not a YF groupie. And I'm not a big Mel Brooks' fan.
But I do love musicals. During the past five years I've seen the Tony-award winning Spring Awakening, Spamalot and Avenue Q in New York; Wicked in Chicago and Hairspray during its pre-Broadway opening in Seattle.
I loved them all.
Last week I received an email from an islander who said I definitely should go see Young Frankenstein -- he described it as "unbelievably good."
I thought it was just OK.
I'll be curious to read what the Seattle media thinks about it when they're finally "allowed" to review the show on August 23. That's the official opening night of the show.
And even more curious to see if New York embraces it as lovingly as they did that big wacky can of Hairspray.
