Roundup: inCampus, Bothell devices, Strands

  • Strands, the Corvalis, Ore., Internet startup that operates personalized news, music and finance sites, has acquired NetworthIQ in a deal of undisclosed size. Last month, Strands acquired Expensr and unveiled MoneyStrands, which the company describes as an "online money management solution that allows users to aggregate their online financial information in one place."

Founded in 2003 by Francisco Martin, Strands has raised $55 million to date.

  • SecondSpace, which operates the real estate sites ResortScape.com and LandWatch.com properties, said it has launched Web sites that cater to second-home buyers in Canada and the United Kingdom. PictureThe Bellevue company, backed by Ignition Partners and led by former Classmates.com executive Anil Pereira, said that the weak U.S. dollar is driving interest among Canadians and British who are looking for second homes in the U.S.

  • The P-I's Joe Tartakoff reports that cell sorting startup Cytopeia -- a spin-off from Seattle's Institute for Systems Biology -- has been acquired by Becton, Dickinson and Co.

  • He's also got a story today on the state's medical device industry, reporting that Bothell has become a center of activity with nearly half of the 5,800 jobs in the Puget Sound region. The growth in the sector -- which has a long history in the area stretching back to University of Washington spin out ATL Ultrasound in 1969 -- comes in "sharp contrast to the faltering fortunes of local biotechnology firms," reports Tartakoff. The story is a walk-up to the Washington State Biomedical Device Summit in Bothell from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.

  • Seattle's inCampus has unveiled the latest version of its Web site for college students, with features that allow students to find jobs, roommates and coupons. Students also can post news or essays in a section called "Buzz," where users can vote on the news a la Digg.

The company is calling the site the first "social commerce network" for college students. Just like how Facebook started, inCampus limits participation to college students. It is currently available at the University of Washington with plans to expand to other campuses later this year.

    FEATURED COMMENT

PictureI was an investor in AdRelevance. Will Hodgman is the poster child of what a Founder/CEO should aspire to be. He is a passionate, inspiring leader that is also very smart, creative and tenacious. Equally important, he looks after the interest of his investors over his own. While this may sound odd, remember, he took their money on a promise of delivering a very positive ROI. Every Founder/CEO should take a page from Will's book. Will, when you start your next company, please call me - I will commit to invest before you give me the pitch."
