Attachmate CEO charged with killing 32 bison

The chairman and chief executive of one of Seattle's largest software companies has been charged with killing 32 bison on a neighbor's ranch in Colorado.

Jeff Hawn, the chairman and chief executive of Attachmate, has been charged with 34 counts of theft, criminal mischief and aggravated cruelty to animals, according to an arrest warrant obtained by Colorado's 9News.com.

The warrant says that Hawn killed two of the bison, while he hired hunters to kill the rest on March 19. Here's more from the 9News.com report:

The hunters with the Atzlan Native Community killed 32 bison belonging to rancher Monte Downare on March 19, including six bulls and some cows that were carrying calves. The arrest warrant said some of the bison were skinned while most of the rest were left to rot.

The dead animals were found over hundreds of acres near Eleven Mile Reservoir in Park County. Authorities say only eight of the bison were killed on Watersedge Properties, which is owned by Hawn. The remaining 24 bison were killed on other property.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Hawn, who lives in Austin, Texas, bought his 362-acre ranch in 1995 and shortly after constructed a fence to keep out livestock. But the fence did not keep out the bison, which under open range laws are able to wander.

Attachmate, which is privately held and makes software to access information from mainframe computers, merged with rival WRQ in one of the largest private equity transactions in the state in 2005. At the time, the combined company employed about 950 people and posted annual revenue of more than $200 million.

Hawn, a former senior vice president at BMC Software and partner at McKinsey, joined WRQ in 2005.

I have a call into Attachmate to see what this means for the company.

The story is big news in Colorado, with the Rocky Mountain News' Bill Johnson calling it "a contract massacre."

Meanwhile, The Denver Post has some gruesome photos of the dead bison and links to the arrest warrant of Hawn. An undersheriff for Park County, where the killings took place, tells the Denver Post that arrangements are being made for Hawn to turn himself in to authorities.

UPDATE: I just heard back from Attachmate spokeswoman Susanne Smith, who would only confirm that Hawn remains the CEO of the company at this time. She declined to answer questions about the potential impact on the company or whether Hawn planned to turn himself in.

UPDATE: Here's my full story, which includes another comment thread.

So, will Hawn get the same treatment by the company? This should be interesting...

What a contrast with the stellar ethics and environmentalism of Doug Walker and other former leaders of WRQ. Bring back Doug!

Apparently, in Mr. Hawn's case MBA stands for Motivated by Avarice. The man has every resource at his disposal. He's educated, has a position in his community, is a congregant in a Christian church, has money, and mobility. But he's morally bankrupt.

Message to the owners of Attachmate (Thoma Cressy Bravo, Golden Gate Capital, Francisco Partners): Do you suppose Mr. Hawn's poor judgement is limited to situations involving bison or do you think it might extend more generally to business practice?

Like the bison were somehow ruining his life? As CEO, do you think he was spending any time at his "ranch?" It's all about me! What a maniacal narcissist. A common trait among serial killers is a history of torturing and/or killing small animals as a child. Makes you wonder about this freako. Glad I don't work for him.

I'm heartened by the posts so far. This is a really, REALLY disturbing story. Admittedly I know nothing about Hawn. And now I don't want to.

He should be made to recover ALL of the bison carcasses personally.... at HIS EXPENSE, plus a huge fine. And I'm sure he can afford it all. Oh, and don't forget, Public Service for the state game department, maybe as a janitor for 5 years in the evenings? People of his ilk just drive me off the deep end!

If his land is fenced off, it is not open range. He should have waited until the bison were on his land, which is where he went wrong.

People, he's a CEO, he is ***NOT*** bound by the same laws as you and I. Silly little people.

It is amazing that a neanderthal of this magnitude still roams the earth. I have a suggestion to the board of this company: Do the right thing and remove this person from your boardroom and spare your company and personnel any more humiliation!

...If his land is fenced off doesn't matter. Range area means that it is incumbent upon a land owner to keep offending animals off his property if he doesn't want them there. If he fails to, his property is fair fodder for range animals. That is the law. I'd think it would take quite a fence to deter a determined bison. I don't think they aren't interested in nibbling your flower garden like deer and cattle are, but haven't had any for neighbors.

Range area also means that the animals have the right of way. If you hit a steer or other critter, you are responsible to it's owner for the cost and the owner is not responsible for your vehicle.

I once went to a drive thru game farm near Sequim that had bison and sold day old bread you could feed them. I remember having a wet nose the size of a basketball snarfling up my side window, their way of begging I guess. The little Toyota we were in, I judged would be no protection at all from one of them should it decide we were holding out. I was real glad to go see the giraffes.

Pretty amazing - free range laws vary from state to state but they are explicit - why in the Hell would you own a 1/2 square mile ranch (give or take - about 600 acres to a square mile if I remember correctly) and then hire hunters to keep the wildlife OFF your Colorado ranch????

If he doesn't want wildlife walking through his property, he could of bought a condo in Belltown.

Sick...and stunning to me that the hunters would have consented and then left the carcasses behind.

One moment of patience may ward off great disaster. One moment of impatience may ruin a whole life....

-Chinese proverb

This guy must have wanted to revisit the good old days
of slaughter and waste of bison. He believes that he could hide behind the aegis of an attorney from the law.
That could be true. However, I *doubt* that he can hide from the court of public opinion and for crying out loud,
human decency.

He's just trying to create a natural preseve free from the intrusions of his neighbor's non-native bison.I've seen similar problems in Nevada where feral horses are called wild mustangs and displace the native wild deer and antelope.Wouldn't it be nice if Seattle wasn't full of pigeons, starlings and english sparrows. As for being a CEO, he sure shows that killer instinct admired in business!

"Range Area" is a legal definition, not just a descriptive one. In such an area, if you shoot your neighbors steer even on your property, you just bought it.

Non-native bison? Sorry they are more native than you or I.

Here is a map of their historic range

Ah, yes, the good old Olympic Game Farm. I never understood how a diet of processed starch was considered healthy for living creatures.

My, my how we've fallen!

Doug Walker, the "W" in WRQ, and it's former CEO is known for philanthropy, environmentalism, the highest of ethics, and is currently the chairman of the board of REI.

Now, with the merged Attachmate/WRQ company, its new CEO is known for *this*??

The board of Attachmate should call for his resignation immediately, before he further damages what was once a great company.

I could see a new future for this jerk. Perhaps working for Colorado DOT picking up roadkill for two or three years plus paying the bisons owner for his loss. I thing that would be fair.

If I had any control of this company, this jerk would have the time for his crime.

This will be interesting as Hawn and Charles Sansbury, the CFO, are very good friends. Think they ran in the same circles back at Vignette. Very sad story. Poor bison never had a chance.

Absolutely amazing - another Dick Cheney (killed hundreds of waterfowl in a single day with hunting partners) in the making. Apparently the new "improved" Attachmate doesn't have a code of conduct/ethics or Hawn wouldn't be CEO.

Why would you be surprised by whatever this slime ball does? He came to the company I worked for, laid off 25% of the organization then took his leave just days after fulfilling enough obligation so he didn't have to repay his multi-million dollar loan. What makes you think he would give a crap about bison????

Here is a guarantee.... the case will simply "go away" said farmer/owner will accept a gift in the background, while whoever is responsible for the prosecution will ensure the charges are lessened or dropped completely. Clearly thats for the good of the seattle community, after he is a pillar of it, is he not? ;)

What jail is he in? I would like to send him a stuffed buffalo toy he can sink his teeth into while he is repeatedly violated by his fellow inmates. Better make the toy big enough to muffle the screams.

"Cheney killed hundreds of waterfowl." Good; bring him to the shores of Lake Washington; plenty of geese to be shot.

Anyone have any qualms about skinning this guy?

I'm so sick of the greed, avarice and downright monstrous behavior of these sickos.

PictureWhy would anyone get this new Iphone? Though advertised as cheaper, it's really more expensive once the monthly fees are put in. And the cost (with the monthly fees included) are prohibitive.

If Microsoft did anything like this, they'd be lambasted big time. Apple does this (Raises prices when pretending to lower them) and folks wait in line for ever."
