Starbucks unveils social network, makes a buy

The Starbucks annual meeting just completed at McCaw Hall at Seattle Center. The Seattle coffee retailer is announcing a slew of news including the acquisition of Seattle-based The Coffee Equipment Co., a new customer loyalty card and a new social networking service.

Terms of the Coffee Equipment acquisition were not disclosed, but Chief Executive Howard Schultz said that Coffee Equipment's Clover machine "unquestionably delivers the best cup of brewed coffee I have ever tasted and we want to share this experience with our customers."

Zander Nosler, co-founder of The Coffee Equipment Company, said in the press release that Starbucks "is uniquely positioned to change the way the world thinks about brewed coffee." More on the company from this P-I profile.

More on Starbucks' new initiatives from the press release, including the new social network called MyStarbucksIdea.com.

"With the launch of MyStarbucksIdea, we are extending the Starbucks community online and creating a dynamic forum that enables us to capture and act upon our customers' best ideas," said Schultz.

Great idea about the social networking piece, since you have a bunch of folks who may be showing up at the same coffee house but may never really "meet". Another good idea would be to stream video to and from each location and let folks from around the world see (and maybe hear) each other at different stores.

Looks like a lot of tap-dancing to cover-up poor sales growth on their core products.

As far as tap-dancing, why not try something new? How well has the books/movies/music venture gone?

Video is all the rage online these days...more page views...ads...Sonics games in OKC...can they stream the coffee aroma too?

would love to see them double down on the quality of the experience and really focus on the coffee. It would be sad if the stores start to feel like a bookstore/CD shop that happens to sell coffee.

Congrats Zander, Randy and team! Will be great to see you bring your magic to Starbucks and its customers.

So...anyone think Clover's investors made any money on this sale?

My guess is that they made some money. Zander is a sharp operator and did not need to sell.

Focus on the coffee? That's what they say they are doing now. So all this time we have been getting screwed for a poor cup of coffee. How about make better coffee and charge us less for a change. That's how you get and keep customers.

Who is Starbucks biggest competitor? Themselves. Trying to put one on every block in every city in every country and all with the same look, taste and feel. What a terrible idea. Embrace the communities you go into. Put local flavor and feel into it. Make it unique not the same cookie cutter approach in every market.

Wake up and smell your own coffee.

PictureForget the ad space altogether. It's time that Microsoft to show the long term vision that created their success in the first place. Clearly there are far more valuable, provocative and lucrative problems for technology to solve than consumer spending and entertainment. It's time for the Blue Monster to think bigger thoughts."
