David Eraker is gearing up to launch a new online service called Mindsite that will attempt to help people find relevant information related to mental health issues.
Best known for founding Redfin, Eraker left the Seattle online real estate startup a few months after it raised an $8 million venture round in May 2006.

Though Mindsite is in a completely different industry, Eraker is drawing on some of his past experience from the real estate business. Just as Redfin licenses data from Multiple Listing Services, Mindsite has licensed a large chunk of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Much of the content in that handbook -- produced by the American Psychiatric Association-- has not been available online, he said.
"We anticipate that users of Mindsite will have much in common with early Redfin search users, relentless in their search for information, and looking for online tools that can help solve offline problems," said Eraker, who plans to launch the site this spring.
The company has raised about $280,000, with advisers including Freemarkets co-founder Sam Kinney and Harvard Medical School professor Ronald Kessler.
Eraker said that mental health is a highly confusing subject for consumers, one that he believes is not addressed well on the Internet. And while big players such as Revolution Health, WebMD, Microsoft, Google and others are attempting to address portions of the market, he said no one has a complete focus on mental health issues.
"You find that information is often ridiculously watered down, locked up behind expensive subscriptions, editorially corrupted, biased, or not credible," notes Eraker. "It is literally impossible to figure out what to do for yourself or for a friend or family member. If you take the next step and seek professional help, you'll receive a wide range of totally different treatment recommendations depending on who you see."
Helping people make sense of information is the goal of Mindsite, though Eraker said the company does not take a position on pharmaceuticals, therapy, alternative approaches or other issues.
"We just think that this market is screwed up and hope to sort it out," he said.
There has been a lot of activity in the online health and wellness arena in Seattle in recent months, with startups such as Sweat365, RealSelf and Trusera (formerly PeerWisdom) launching. Meanwhile, Bellevue health search engine Healia was acquired last year, as was Seattle's HealthTalk.

Forget the ad space altogether. It's time that Microsoft to show the long term vision that created their success in the first place. Clearly there are far more valuable, provocative and lucrative problems for technology to solve than consumer spending and entertainment. It's time for the Blue Monster to think bigger thoughts."

Interesting. What's the revenue model? Referral Fees? Sponsorships? Advertising?
