IAA: A very bad night for predictions

Don't head to the horse track or Vegas with me anytime soon.

I was skunked in my predictions for the 13th annual Industry Achievement Awards.

A big bagel. The goose egg.

Zero for six.

Some of the winners rightfully rubbed my nose in the poor picks.

Ashwin Rao of TravellingWave -- which won in the breakthrough technology category -- joked that he didn't prepare a speech because of my prediction.

Yapta's Tom Romary -- who won in the hotly contested consumer category -- also slammed me in his acceptance speech.

"Boy, John Cook is having a bad night," he said.

I couldn't say it better. I think I will try to sneak out of the hotel tonight.

Here are the true winners. Congrats.

  • Business product of the year: Tableau Software

  • Breakthrough technology of the year: TravellingWave

  • Consumer product of the year: Yapta

  • Service provider of the year: Ramp Group

  • Technology Innovator of the year: Bryan Mistele, Inrix

  • Best Use of Technology in the Government, Non-Profit or Education Sector: King County District Court

Jennifer Chen, an eighth-grader at Washington Middle School, also was honored as a "Technology Leader of Tomorrow."

Congratulations to the entire Yapta team! I know you've put a lot of hard work in during a very short time and now you have the hardware!

Is there a national award we can go for next year? ;-)

    All my best,

Brett - a missing Bellingham based founder. (I really wish I had re-scheduled my date night (so does my wife) to be at the table with Tom!)

Don't sweat it, John. After all, it was the "13th" annual Industry Achievement Awards. Chalk it up to superstition.

Frankly, I'm surprised by the breakthrough technology winner. I've been watching my 18 year old daughter and her friends text each other for a couple of years and my daughter sends about 2000 text messages per month. I can't imagine that she would EVER want to say her messages *out loud* allowing other people to hear. One of the key benefits to texting is that it can be done *privately*! Who do they imagine will want such technology? I don't get it...

warm up Inrix and start reporting more and you will pick Inrix in more awards and you will be right more often. HOT startup doing some great stuff

The funniest part about this is how 'newsworthy' the WSA name change is. I really can't believe going from the Washington Software Association to the Washington Technology Industry Association is such a headliner. Also the bummer thing about these awards is you can only get nominated if you are a memeber. Too bad because there are a ton of great, profitable companies out there that I would pick over these.

Actually, you do not need to be a member to be nominated for these awards. I think a lot of the nominees just end up becoming members because they work with WTIA so much that they realize all the benefits they are missing out on otherwise.

I would like to know how many of the winners are WTIA members.

PictureForget the ad space altogether. It's time that Microsoft to show the long term vision that created their success in the first place. Clearly there are far more valuable, provocative and lucrative problems for technology to solve than consumer spending and entertainment. It's time for the Blue Monster to think bigger thoughts."
