Building a startup in 54 hours

Check out Seattle's latest Internet startup, Skillbit, created as part of the Startup Weekend occurring at the Adobe offices in Fremont.

Picture

There's not much on the site at this time, just a message asking people to sign up to be notified when the service debuts. That should be in a few hours since the goal is to get a business launched in 54 hours.

About 120 developers, lawyers and entrepreneurs started on the project Friday at 6 p.m., with some folks continuing to work on the business until midnight Friday and Saturday.

"It is moving," said Kimm Viebrock, a technology consultant who has been blogging about the event and spoke to me a few minutes ago. "We still believe we are going to have something to launch at 9 p.m."

The team has run into some problems, including a wireless router issue that disrupted some testing. Currently, developers are testing the service and working out a few bugs.

"But that is what is to be expected at this point," said Viebrock, adding that folks are shooting for the 9 p.m. deadline so they can get a celebratory drink.

About 120 people are participating in the creation of SkillBit, described as a way for teams to leverage "the skills, knowledge and experience of its members." Of the 13 Startup Weekends held around the globe, only the San Francisco Bay Area attracted more people.

More on the formation of Skillbit here, with a description of why they scrapped an online car pool resource in the first few hours.

My story last October also described the people who like to create startups on super fast time frames.

Does this sound like Bubble 2.0 to anyone else in the startup ecosphere? Now we just create value in 54 hours?
For my team meeting tomorrow I am going to tell them to "hang in there for just another 54 hours and we will be the next Microsoft, Google or Amazon."
And I will remind them that if we get done by 9PM we can all have a "celebratory drink".
I hope the lawyers are paying. ;)

Is this the standard cut and paste response to StartupWeekend?

For a brief moment, between the final word and the click of "post comment" did you think to take a look at what StartupWeekend is trying to accomplish?

Yes, a product can be built in 54 hours. It happens all the time. With Web 2.0 technologies, its even easier. And yes, at the end of a StartupWeekend often a few people stick around to play with the newly birthed product and to take a shot at building a company.

Where does StartupWeekend say that they are launching the next "Microsoft, Google or Amazon?"

Back to that moment between the last word of your comment and the click on the post comment link. At that moment, Unregistered User, take a breath and take a look at what StartupWeekend is all about. Oh, and take a moment to put your name on your comments, your anonymity hides only your name, not your ignorance.

I am sure they accomplished more in 3 days than most companies do in a year. Way to go and look forward to seeing more of this.

FEATURED COMMENT

PictureForget the ad space altogether. It's time that Microsoft to show the long term vision that created their success in the first place. Clearly there are far more valuable, provocative and lucrative problems for technology to solve than consumer spending and entertainment. It's time for the Blue Monster to think bigger thoughts."
