Earth Class Mail, which allows people to view their postal mail online, has closed its first round of funding at $13.3 million.

The Seattle company had an initial close of $7.4 million in September. At the time, the company was looking to raise a total of $19.69 million.
In a press release, Chief Executive Ron Wiener said the company had no trouble raising capital.
"We were faced with the classic quandary of whether to go with institutional investment for our Series A or to stay with an all-angel financing round. As the record-holder for a technology company raising capital through the Keiretsu Forum, and having fielded a great deal of unsolicited interest from institutional VCs, we were confident that we could succeed on either path."
Ignition Partners and Keiretsu Forum participated in the funding, with Jonathan Roberts and Robert Headley of Ignition and Kenn Dahl of Keiretsu joining the board.
Formerly known as Document Command and Remote Control Mail, the three-year-old startup allows businesses and individuals to view their mail wherever they have an Internet connection. Users can choose to have the mail shredded, forwarded to a physical address or opened and viewed electronically in a PDF format. Here's a profile from December 2006.
Earth Class Mail will be the subject of a new reality TV show called "Start-up Junkies" on MOJO HD. The show is scheduled to begin January 24 at 10 p.m.
(In the interest of full disclosure, the production company contacted me for suggestions on companies and I put a call out on the blog.)
Here's how they are billing the show, which followed the company over a nine-month period.
Viewers will witness the triumphs and stumbles the "junkies" encounter. The Chief Marketing Officer at one point is unable to log onto the customer website during an investor presentation. Three employees attempt guerilla marketing tactics at an RV Show, but their ploy backfires when they get caught. The CEO reluctantly has to sell his 10,000-square-foot home and personal aircraft, and move into a rental home, to fund the early stages. Start-Up Junkies looks at raising money, hiring employees and dealing with demanding clients, all while contending with monumental technological issues and business hurdles. These driven personalities have proven themselves before. Will they be able to pull off another success with Earth Class Mail?

Forget the ad space altogether. It's time that Microsoft to show the long term vision that created their success in the first place. Clearly there are far more valuable, provocative and lucrative problems for technology to solve than consumer spending and entertainment. It's time for the Blue Monster to think bigger thoughts."

That's just still a dumb name for a company. Didn't they go through a name change already?
