Monday roundup: Clearwire in Charlotte, the power of algae, Zango's new hires, etc.

  • P-I reporter Todd Bishop follows up on the Entertainment Software Association's report from last week showing that the state of Washington ranks second in terms of jobs in the computer and video game industry. Dick Conway, co-publisher of the Puget Sound Economic Forecaster, says that the game industry here is "not peanuts." But he adds that it doesn't drive the economy like aerospace or software.

  • Bellevue's Zango, the online advertising company formerly known as 180solutions, has named Val Sanford vice president of marketing and product management and Neal Freeland as vice president of business development. Sanford joined Zango in June 2006 following stints at Singlestep Technologies and Network Commerce. Freeland joins from Microsoft, where he worked in marketing functions on Windows Live and Live Search.

  • Yapta, the Seattle startup that allows consumers to track airfares and receive refunds on tickets, said it has released a version of the bookmarking service that is compatible with the Firefox browser. Yapta, which has delivered more than $10 million in potential savings to travelers, raised $2.3 million from First Round Capital, Voyager Capital and others in July.

  • Kirkland-based Clearwire has launched its broadband wireless service in Charlotte, the sixth market for the company in North Carolina.

  • Medio Systems Chief Executive Brian Lent has been named as one of the Top 50 Content Executives by Mobile Entertainment magazine, which follows honors by The World Economic Forum last month for the Seattle mobile search startup.

  • Visible Technologies, which raised $12 million in September to help clients track conversations on blogs and social networking sites, has named Alan Schanzer to its board of directors. Schanzer is the managing partner of MEC Interaction North America and founder of Digital Edge.

  • A good read from The Associated Press on algae as a biofuel source, noting that an algae farm can be located almost anywhere and doesn't require the use of cropland reserved for agriculture. The story doesn't mention Seattle's Imperium Renewables which has placed some bets on algae in recent months, including a plan to convert its five million gallon Seattle facility for experiments involving fuel from algae.

and will be available on Yapta's website tomorrow morning: http://www.yapta.com/download

Thanks, and please feel free to send us feedback: feedback@yapta.com

Am I the only person here who doesn't want to hear anything about Zango? They operate a sinister marketing business, using games as bait to convince unsuspecting computer users to install adware and spyware on their computers, padding Zango's pockets with ad revenue. It's a deceptive business and personally, I wouldn't like to hear anything about Zango in the media save for federal suits from the FTC (already happened) or a bankruptcy (not likely).

It might be part of the P-I's mission to inform us about local business, but that's no matter: unethical businesses should be shunned.

You are not the only person.

The only Zango article I'm ever going to be happy to read will be the one where the Attorney General closes their corrupt asses down. I'm ashamed that a business like that exists in my town.

    FEATURED COMMENT

PictureForget the ad space altogether. It's time that Microsoft to show the long term vision that created their success in the first place. Clearly there are far more valuable, provocative and lucrative problems for technology to solve than consumer spending and entertainment. It's time for the Blue Monster to think bigger thoughts."
