A sentence near the end of The Wall Street Journal's story on Google's new mobile operating system -- Android -- caught my attention the other day. Reporters Kevin Delaney and Amol Sharma wrote:

"Google said the Android platform will make it easy for developers to write applications that meld different data sources, such as a service that shows users where their friends are at any given moment on a map."

Sound familiar? That's the exact wireless service that Seattle-based Pelago introduced last month with Whrrl.

So could we see Pelago -- which is backed with $7.4 million from Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, Trilogy Equity Partners and Kleiner Perkins -- roll out the Whrrl service on Google's new platform?

Too early to say, but maybe the folks at Pelago can shed some light on this. Meanwhile, ValleyWag is reporting on what it calls the first Google phone application -- a service from secretive WhatsOpen.com that apparently shows mobile phone users the operating hours of nearby stores.

That is also the type of offering I could see Whrrl adding. After all, it has a bunch of contractors in the Philippines collecting piles of information on local businesses.
