Will facebook truly create a new social operating system? Will others (eg. google) try and compete in that space? Can more than one social operating system exist?

The dependence of (the majority) of Web 2.0 consumer facing propositions on advertising requires that they first attract their share of the "attention economy". While consumers have migrated media consumption toward online, this hasn't come at the expense of TV, gaming, movies. And the largest web properties (Facebook, et al) have a disproportionate share of user time spent online. Per capita internet usage has more or less asymtoted and is no longer growing. In the absence of a 25th hour to the day, how does a Web 2.0 company survive on 90 seconds of attention a day if they are lucky? (OK, that was long !)

It seems like there are two kinds of Web 2.0 companies. Those for people that want to save time online (LinkedIn, Craigslist, Wikipedia, Yelp) and those for people that want to spend time online (Facebook, MySpace, YouTube). Do you think the same business model will work for both kinds of Web 2.0 companies?

I think there are too many. Too many bookmarks, logins, passwords. I'm inundated with them. consolidation in this case wouldnt be bad.

(1) Will the use of AJAX and Ruby on Rails at most Web 2.0 companies (which, as I understand it, do not affect "page views" as much as more traditional webpage creation tools) affect the way that eyeballs are monetized? That is, will Neilsen Net Ratings, MediaMetrix, Comscore, and other web traffic tools be able to figure out other ways to measure "consumer behavior" with Web 2.0 sites that use AJAX and Ruby?

(2) Relatedly, will CPM continue to be the primary basis for ad revenue generation, or will it progress to CPC or CPA? And what method of monetization (CPM, CPC, CPA) is more (a) advantageous and (b) realistic for Web 2.0 companies to use in its financial modeling / business planning?

(3) How will click fraud which plagues ad-portals like Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft affect the Web 2.0 landscape that relies heavily on advertising for traffic and relies even more heavily probably on advertising as its revenue source (based on # people coming to its site via clicks)?

(4) Will users start wanting a piece of the pie (i.e. some revenue) for adding user-generated content to a site? This is an especially interesting question in light of who owns the Intellectual Property (IP) for that user-generated content (i.e. I think that the site owns it after the user puts it up, but please correct me if I am wrong).

I have to agree with the above poster. It seems like they're pushing tin with Web 2.0, when most people want other solutions that are platform independent.

2) What are your thoughts on the development of or goal for some web 2.0 entrepreneurs to build lifestyle businesses versus getting to a liquidity event?
3) For social networks, is the future going to see larger main sites (facebook, myspace, bebo, etc) or more targeted niche communities?
4) Where is the Seattle area strongest and where are we weakest?
5) How does the startup community in Seattle compare to Vancouver BC, Portland, San Francisco, Boston, etc?
6) How can we promote and grow the community through tough times if the current bubble pops?

How much money did each of you *personally* spend on your previous startups? What was the total investment in each of your startups? What were the total revenues in its corporate lifetime? What was the revenue to investment ratios for each of your previous companiess?

As a consumer, I'm feeling a bit tired of being the IT manager at my house. Our kids our getting older, and they are interested in tech products. The number of PCs in my house is growing, and they all need to be managed, backedup, virus, etc. Everyone in the house now has an ipod and an Itunes library. We have a PS3 that is on the network. Grandparents bought the kids digital cameras with different memory sticks. :( HDTV w/comcast... Tivo on the old TV. My cellphones (Treo 700w) that is more like a computer than a phone. I feel like the IT guy at my house, something is always breaking.

Anybody else feel this way? By the time I'm done fixing things I don't have time to go to a Web 2.0 site to chat with friends.

It's becoming a full time job. Can Web 2.0 help me?

5) Who coined the term 2.0?
6) What is the role of Content Aggregators (like Pageflakes) in 2.0 space?
7) What are the characteristics of Web 2.0?
8) Is Web 2.0 limited to WEB?
9) How do you see the Enterprise world changing with 2.0 technologies?
10) Do you think Enterprises need 2.0 technologies? If yes, why? If not, why not?
11) What are the downsides of 2.0?
12) I have to build a community web site on 2.0 for a particular demography - how would I go about specing it out?
