A talk with Jobster's Jason Goldberg

It has been just over six months since Jobster, the Seattle online recruiting startup backed with $48 million in venture funding, chopped 60 employees in a highly-public layoff.

Since then, Jobster Chief Executive Jason Goldberg has attempted to reposition the Seattle startup. The 35-year-old entrepreneur -- labeled brash, controversial and arrogant by some -- says he has learned a lot in the past couple of years and has now come back with a new 10-year vision for how to better match job seekers and employers online.

"I think one of the lessons that I have learned is that you can be in hurry up mode, but at a certain point this stuff takes time," he said. "...It doesn't happen over night."

I sat down with Goldberg this week at the company's headquarters overlooking Elliott Bay to discuss everything from the layoffs -- "we were a family, family company" and "it was hard" -- to the business outlook -- its recruiting tools business just turned a profit, with full profitability possibly occurring early next year -- to why some view him as arrogant -- "it is not about Jason Goldberg" -- to the amount of time he spends blogging -- "people would be shocked if they knew how little a part of my job it is."

Jobster now employs 65 people, though it has started hiring again in the past two months (including three people who were let go during the layoff). And the company, which plans to start distributing branded-versions of Jobster to third parties and launch a new application for Facebook, said revenue should grow by 60 percent this year at half the cost.

Goldberg calls Jobster an aggressive and confident company, but he doesn't believe that crosses the line into arrogance.

On how the company has changed since the layoff:

On arrogance and confidence at Jobster:

On why Jobster grew so big so fast:

+1 for posting the audio clips. The first two were especially revealing.

He dances around his mistakes and failures, and through it all shows has zero appreciation for his role in the lose of capital and the wake of career debris that Jobster's mismangement created.

A 10 yr vision for a 35 year old? Isn't that the definition of "hubris?"

So many to choose from this time around. However, there is one in particular that is almost too good to be true. A small yet very significant gem that absolutely cements my notion of Goldberg as one of the biggest clowns around. Funny enough, it's right there in John's text.

Goldberg is an illeist! Many of us suspected it was the case but this confirmation is pure gold. We may now officially lump him in with those others whose egos are so huge that there simply is only room for one in their heads.

"George likes spicy chicken."
"Rickey don't like it when Rickey can't find Rickey's limo."
"It's time to stop bashing Geraldo.

It's almost going to be a shame to see this thing tank as soon as the bump from the whacks passes. The boat spills... the name dropping... the insanely comical iPod episode... the truly unbalanced approach to "leadership"... the unhinged threats against fellow workers... They've got it all +1.

1. This guy is too "smart" to learn.
2. Does not understand what a Brand is.

But I could only listen to the first two audio.

Interesting interview. Luckily for him his wife controls the purse-strings (board member and partner at company's vc Ignition Partner); explains the money pit mentality and his confidence. Sleeping with the boss does pay off!

jobster very confusing, i dont think he knows what he is talking about, first he is not a recruiter or from the space the process of thinking not there for recruitment at all, sending email chain to people no big deal. I am surprise companies are getting resumes for spam emails.

His strenght is his weakness.

He judges he does not listen.

He is a gen y ceo

He has a social personality disorder characterized by a egocentiric world view that manifests itself in aggressive overconfident posturing and behavior without empathy or remorse. - gee most foks at ignition are like that too - old Microsoft

FEATURED COMMENT

PictureForget the ad space altogether. It's time that Microsoft to show the long term vision that created their success in the first place. Clearly there are far more valuable, provocative and lucrative problems for technology to solve than consumer spending and entertainment. It's time for the Blue Monster to think bigger thoughts."
