I hate the term Web 2.0 as it's just so VCish and catchphras'ish. It just seems like the type of stupid buzz word you would hear your local tech company try to spill out when meeting with a VC trying to get funded. Last time I did a pitch, and I'm not kidding, one of the VCs across the table, in one sentence said the following words/phrases - Web 2.0, Tipping Point and Long Tail. I almost stood up and walked out. And yes, we did get funded but not by those guys.

I like terms like "Web 2.0" because they give you a good enough sense about what you are talking about without being too specific. This is great when the thing you are talking about is itself kind of fuzzy and flexible.

Using such terms also makes VC's eyes light up and makes the "language purists" get all worked up, both of which are very good things.

Is web 2.0 close to reaching "dot bomb" status?

There is an eerie resemblance to all these web 2.0 companies and the internet companies of the last millenium.

None of the web 2.0 commpanies have made a dime and pride themselves on meaningless metrics like alexa rankings and blog mentions.

Most interesting is that these sites are supposed to be giving the consumer what they want.

Really?

If that is so why hasn't Zillow's traffic grown in over a year and a company like HomeGain, a web 1.0 company (who recently brought back their original instant homevaluation tool -on their site from 1999-2001-you can try it here http://www.homegain.com) still draws more traffic and certainly greater profits than Zillow?

Its also interesting that NONE of the web 2.0 companies has gone public-how can they when none of them make any money....

None of those Web 2.0 companies made a dime? Really? Even Zillow? Okay, I don't see that as true whatsoever. Maybe they haven't become Google level or anything, but you can be sure Zillow and iLike are making money. How exactly would they keep running and staying in the top SERPs and stuff if they weren't? They make a ton of money, and therefore have the money to pay SEOs and PR people to keep them in the news.

Also, to be honest, I don't think I'd consider HomeGain a web 1.0 site - oh maybe they were at first, but they have definitely changed with the times. Unlike some sites like HouseValues or GetMyHomesValue.com who seem to be taking a little longer to catch up. Then again, they do provide slightly different services than sites like Zillow or HomeGain.

Thanks for adding that link in there Louis, I never saw that site before, but it seems handy!

Zillow stays in business because they are Venture Capital funded to the tune of tens of millions of dollars like many of the web 2.0 companies.

VC's fund these start up companies in the hope that one out of ten of them makes it big time.

Right now Zillow, DIGG, ilike etc are focused on getting eyeballs and learning how to monetize them.

For a web 2.0 company even at current traffic levels of 2-4 million visits a month there is no way just selling banner ads makes any profitable revenue-especially if the traffic isn't growing.

The hope is that web 2.0 companies eventually figure out how to make money before the VC money dries up.

Right now the web 2.0 companie are just like all the internet companies of the last millenium-pets.com, drugs.com etc-heavily funded, drawing visitors, but not making any money.

At some point the vc's will want a return on investment. Sometimes they will add more money to a company that show promise-Zillow has received two rounds of financing, so their backers are not giving up on them yet. Zillow's founders have a track record of making their investors money, so they may have some tricks up their sleeve.

Another year, however of no traffic growth and a business model that continues to rely on selling banner ads and it may be a different story next year....

Remember after the internet boom there were but a handful of companies left standing-aol.com, amazon.com, yahoo.com, ebay.com

Gone or totally irrelevant are pointcast.com, pets.com, drugs.com, excite.com,lycos.com,cdnow.com, the list goes on and on.

The current web 2.0 crop certainly will start to thin out in a year or so if they can't turn a profit and the Vcs are unwilling to continue to fund their losses.

Only the best funded, with the best management and best business models will survive.

Of all the web 2.0 companies, I believe Zillow has the best shot of staying in the game.
