Tuesday roundup: Bezos in space, Medio's new hire, Zoo.com, etc.

  • InfoSpace, which is chopping staff and repositioning the business, continues to look for new revenue streams. The latest offering from the Bellevue company is Zoo.com, a search engine that P-I reporter Dan Richman says is designed to keep sexually explicit content away from children.

  • Medio Systems -- the Seattle mobile search startup backed by Mohr Davidow Ventures, Frazier Technology Ventures and others -- has hired Omar Tawakol as chief advertising officer. He joins the startup from Revenue Science, a Bellevue company where he served as chief marketing officer. Interestingly, Revenue Science, which raised $24 million last December, also is backed by Mohr Davidow.

  • GalleryPlayer has inked a deal to have its digital artwork programs distributed through Comcast's video on demand service. The Seattle startup, which I profiled last year after it raised $4 million from Menlo Ventures, hopes to make money by offering advertisements before and after the art programs.

  • Blue Origin -- the Kent-based space startup of Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos -- has launched its first test rocket from the Texas desert. Culberson County Judge John Conoly -- who lives in nearby Van Horn and was unaware of the launch -- described Blue Origin as "highly secretive." The Wall Street Journal has a good read on the secretive nature of Blue Origin's operations and land dealings in Texas, writing that Bezos "doesn't necessarily make the most neighborly of neighbors."

  • OnSiteDocs has launched a new medical house call program and changed its name to Carena. Founded in Seattle six years ago, the company raised $6.25 million from Benaroya Capital, Fluid Capital and Fluke Venture Partners in May. It is led by Ralph Derrickson, a former venture capitalist at Paul Allen's Vulcan Capital.
