Adam, web 2.0 clearly means "uses javascript."

It's sort of like "alternative" rock in 1995: by that time, there was no mainstream rock because the definition had been used so much as to render it meaningless.

I pose a question to you, John: how about a list of web 1.0 startups in Seattle? Are there any?

I like the idea of doing a Web 1.0 company list. In fact, I wrote about some of the survivors earlier this year.

Classmates, Blue Nile, Onvia, MountainZone, OfficeSpace.com are just a few. Maybe I will have to do this in the upcoming weeks.

Also, some people have e-mailed me some other names to put on the Web 2.0 list.

Those companies include Trailmark, Icebreaker, Digbee and Overcast Media.

Others Online is a new one that just launched out of stealth last week. Seems to be contextual/behavioral ad technologies applied to social networking to connect people with other relevant people as they browse the Web (via a toolbar). Pretty cool, actually.

How could you forget the "43things.com" family of sites, in your list ?

They were web2.0 cool (social website: tagging/folksonomy) way before the term became fashionable.

There's a company called SmileBox that allows consumers to create personalized photo greetings/messages with music and other multimedia. Founded by an ex-Real Networks guy.

I forgot Smilebox, but they are a little different since it requires a software download instead of acting as a Web service. However, it does have some Web 2.0 traits -- consumer oriented, social networking element of sharing the online greetings and some user-generated content for the designs.

As to Quire, I had not heard of them but maybe we now have a Web 2.0 company that begins with "Q." Also, do you have a Web site for them or know who to contact?

"Clearstays.com" is a Travel 2.0 Startup that I'm following because it allows the Hotels to market their product to end consumer. I think this is a future distribution channel for the hospitality industry.

John, Smilebox is far more Web 2.0 than most on your list. Just because they have a downloadable doesn't mean they aren't a 2.0 company. And using that logic don't forget Zango, one of your favorite targets. I know you aren't a fan, but they are the revenue engine behind many other web 2.0 companies. Their recently revamped site allows people to share and actually make money from digital content. Go figure.

Oh, and you mentioned that the Web 2.0 companies typically only employ only a handful of Seattlites but being a former employee there I can tell you that they are probably one of the biggest web 2.0 employers in the entire northwest.

I just joined MegaBuzz alpha...its a fun site. You can join by requesting an invitation on their site. I can see them launching with pretty cool social network features on the data that they capture during the experience....pretty cool.

TextPayMe was acquired by Amazon.com last Summer (2006). The three cofounder of TextPayMe are working for Amazon now. Amazon is very secretive about this type of acquisition. Amazon will soon release a payment product.

LocoGopher.com is another web 2.0(ish) site located on the west coast. It allows people to search their local communities without ads or sponsored search results. Find & Review your favorite and not so favorite local businesses and get their phone number, website, coupons, menus and other documents.
