Redfin looks for PR help

Buoyed by its recent $8 million venture funding, Redfin is now on the prowl for a communications manager. Picture

But the online real estate broker, which under the direction of Chief Executive Glenn Kelman has won press attention in publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, isn't looking for some ordinary PR flack.

The job description on Craigslist says they don't want "someone to flog press releases, or blitz his or her rolodex."

We don't need to build a 12-month PR plan just now and we have no interest in hiring a PR agency. We believe that great PR starts with having a nose for a compelling story, a passion for what the company is doing, and a genuine interest in journalism. We believe the best kind of PR involves reading what journalists are writing, thinking carefully about what's really interesting in a business, and developing unique story ideas that aren't always based on the party line.

What would the world look like if all PR jobs were created this way? My life would probably be a little saner.

Easy there, big fella. Remember that all of us flaks are not created equal!

First off, what kind of freak goes undercover on Craig's List to figure out what companies are up to? That's awesome.

Second, you must be the only person who liked the job description, as we haven't had any applications aside from one person asking, "Are you serious?"

Wait, wait, sorry to be a goofball. Two people have applied after all (went to junk mail).

Pretty funny Glenn. And, you are right, I am a "freak" when it comes to this kind of stuff.

As a former journalist and current flak, I'm really pleased to see that kind of job description. I think it's an enlightened approach to PR.

FEATURED COMMENT

PictureForget the ad space altogether. It's time that Microsoft to show the long term vision that created their success in the first place. Clearly there are far more valuable, provocative and lucrative problems for technology to solve than consumer spending and entertainment. It's time for the Blue Monster to think bigger thoughts."
