A moment with David Roberts of PopCap Games

At 44 years old, PopCap Games Chief Executive David Roberts likes to joke that he is "the adult supervision" at the Seattle computer game maker.

But Roberts, who joined the 6-year-old company last April after stints at Aldus and Apple Computer, is doing a lot more than just boosting the average employee age.

The avid bicyclist who received his MBA from Stanford University is responsible for PopCap's biggest expansion to date, one that will take the profitable maker of games such as "Bejeweled" and "Zuma" to new markets overseas. As part of that effort, the 60-person company is announcing a new office in Dublin, Ireland, today. The office will serve as PopCap's international base, translating games into French, German, Swedish and other languages. It is expected to grow to more than 50 employees in the next five years.

PopCap, whose easy-to-play puzzle, word and card games have been downloaded more than 175 million times, is profitable and growing. But Roberts said he does worry about increasing competition and that "stupid venture capital money" will screw up the fast growing industry.

PictureForget the ad space altogether. It's time that Microsoft to show the long term vision that created their success in the first place. Clearly there are far more valuable, provocative and lucrative problems for technology to solve than consumer spending and entertainment. It's time for the Blue Monster to think bigger thoughts."
