« Fall TV Poll: Wow. Whoa. | Main | Some early presents for "Nip/Tuck" fans. Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD. »

CBS gave the hook to "Viva Laughlin" after two woefully wee showings, dealing another setback to Melanie Griffith's cosmetic surgery account. Sorry, Mrs. Antonio Banderas, that new forehead will simply have to wait.
On the bright side, if you bet money that it would be the first scripted series to go, you have probably earned yourself a jumbo Snickers bar or about 10 minutes of prime peepery at the Lusty Lady. Congratulations.
(Technically "Laughlin" is not the first fall series to implode. Leading its way down the path to cancellation hell were two unscripted series, Fox's "Nashville" and The CW's "Online Nation.")
As for those who thought ABC's "Cavemen," the second worst pilot of the fall, would get the axe first, let this be a lesson to you. ABC is a network that sees its sitcom mistakes through to the bitter end. Even last season's comedic miscarriage "Big Day," sold to us as a wedding meets "24" (!!!!) got the opportunity to stink up the airwaves until the network's episode commitment was fulfilled. No matter what, "Cavemen" was going to make it for at least a few weeks.
CBS, meanwhile, is not a patient network, no matter how hard it tries to tart up. How impatient is it, you ask? "Viva Laughlin's" information has disappeared already from the CBS press website. That makes it akin to a horrible dream. Shh, shh, hush my children. It never really happened.
Nobody can feign surprise at this move, right? Honestly, as soon as CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler uttered the word "musical" at last May's upfronts, you knew that "Viva Laughlin" would be born to die. Wave goodbye, or save your energy to celebrate the news that the 12th installment of "The Amazing Race" takes over the 8 p.m Sunday slot on Nov. 4.
In happier news, depending on your perspective, The CW's "Gossip Girl," ABC's "Private Practice," and CBS's "Big Bang Theory" have gotten full season pick-ups.
No word yet on "Cavemen's" impending extinction.
UPDATE: ABC has also given "Pushing Daisies" a full season pick-up. Hooray!

I must admit, I'm a bit disgusted that 'Private Practice' is going to be around for the entire year. UGH! But the news that excited me was that "The Amazing Race" is returning in just a few weeks. Bring on the Philiminator!
