A Second Opinion

I was getting my spring/summer wardrobe out the other day (because I'm pretending that eventually it will stop raining, snowing or sleeting) when I came across a shirtdress I bought last fall at the end of the season. I wanted to wear it with leggings and at the time I thought it looked pretty good.

Putting in on yesterday morning, though, it felt more like something my 10 year old would wear. So, I walked into her room and asked her opinion. Was it too short? "Yes, mom," she said, "it is a little short... but you could wear it with jeans!" And you know what? She was right.

Now, I don't always take my daughter's advice but sometimes I do. And this time I did. The "dress" is a great look with jeans for me and if I were 25 it would be a great look with leggings. The thing is, it's important to "remember who you are" (as my dad would say) and I'm going to add to that: remember how old you are when pulling together an outfit.

A few years ago I heard a commentator on the red carpet say, "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." And it's very true. The last thing I want to be again is in my 20's. I love being a mom and being my age. That doesn't mean I have to wear "mom jeans" and feel old but it also means that I need to watch that I'm not trying to look too young. We are not competing with our daughters, we are (hopefully) at this age, just being ourselves.

The next time you aren't sure about a look... ask for some advice. Maybe your 10 year old has the perfect answer.
