Happy Birthday

Leave it to me to go from being overly inspired to being filled with no desire what so ever to write something for my little piece of this here internet. But today is a special day and the perfect time to pay tribute to one of the greatest to ever do it; Mr. Isaac Hayes, R.I.P.

Isaac Hayes "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic"

When he passed, just 10 days ago everyone was quick to get their tributes out to the man and many were incredibly well done. But it's always bothered me how we tend to celebrate the work of great artists on the anniversary of their death rather than that of their birth. Does this make sense? Not to me, which is why today August 20th, 2008 - what would have been Isaac Hayes 66 birthday, I'm here to pay tribute to this genius.

The above song caught me awhile ago, but I always come back to it when I want to hear something funky from the man who brought us countless jams filled with his trademark vocals and enough dirty Memphis funk and soul to please any number of todays beat makers.

From the serious work on the keys throughout the entire track to the chicks singing the title as a refrain throughout, with the drum breaks and fills, this track drives along and builds all the way to the end before a powerful explosion that is garunteed to make you get up off your feet!

If you only new Isaac Hayes for "Shaft" or perhaps even just for his voice as the South Park character Chef, or maybe you just haven't put on Hot Buttered Soul for a minute. Whatever the case may be, this man created great music for us to enjoy for years to come, so get on out and listen to the Black Moses who saved Stax Records and helped a country in need of something more. He will be missed, but his music will always be only a drop of the needle away.
