When people hear "Joe the plumber" this morning, they think of Joe Wurzelbacher, the Ohio businessman who's become both punchline and political puppet since Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain brought him up multiple times at Wednesday night's debate.

But down in Amarillo, Texas, the phrase refers to Joe the Plumber, a neighborhood plumbing company that's already feeling the effects of being tied, however indirectly, to a national talking point.
"It's crazy. Phones have been ringing off the wall," said Joe Aguayo, the man who picked up the phone when I called the number listed at joetheplumber.com. "We're thinking something like this wouldn't happen to us."
Aguayo, who clarified that he is not who the business is named for, came in this morning to help the receptionist answer "about a thousand" calls from people who found the number on its Web site. Many have asked whom they support in the election.
Aguayo's answer to callers is that the business endorses "Joe the Plumber." But, speaking only for himself, Aguayo said, he supports Obama.
Wurzelbacher's overnight notoriety is a cautionary tale of a different sort in what is by far the most hyper-scrutinized campaign in history.
Usually, it's the candidates' over-exposure that headlines stories about the power of our media.
But the candidates are contagious. Anyone who crosses their path risks being carried away by the same whirlwind of rumor and prejudice that pits them in a kind of netherworld.
Joe Wurzelbacher doesn't have a plumber's license and has a tax lien on his house. He probably wouldn't want that broadcast to his neighbors. Now, just because he asked Barack Obama about taxes, it's been broadcast to the whole world.
Maybe that's why Aguayo called all the attention "scary." For Wurzelbacher, it must be terrifying.
"I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing. Just gotta see where it goes," Aguayo said. "Too many things trying to sink in right now."
Below is the Toledo Blade's interview with Wulzelbacher, its new local celebrity.
Update: Another, more local "Joe the plumber" has been taking heat. KIRO TV reports that Joe Canon, whose Web site is joetheplumberseattle.com, is also answering a lot of phone calls.

I almost feel sorry for the guy. He's not a political celebrity, he's a political football. Let him be. For every plumber who wants to buy the business he works for, there are 10 independent plumbers who are shelling out too much for private healthcare. There are plumbers who are moving into other fields because the economy is tanking, and subdivisions aren't popping up everywhere any more. There are plumbers who want to college educate their kids.
Plumbers are just Americans, with all the same problems as IT workers, business owners, desk-jockies, and students.
