New York Times: Gregoire v. Rossi 'verbatim' replay of 2004

In the noise over the national campaign and this sagging economy, the New York Times is talking about state gubernatorial races -- and taking an outsider's look today at Washington state:

In Washington, an almost verbatim replay of the 2004 election is unfolding, with Gov. Christine Gregoire, a Democrat, facing off against Dino Rossi, a Republican former state senator. Ms. Gregoire beat Mr. Rossi by fewer than 200 votes last time -- one of the closest major elections in American history -- and the two are running neck and neck again as though time had stopped.

Washington is one of 11 states to hold gubernatorial elections this November, but one of only three -- according to stats by the independent nonpartisan research group Cook Political Report -- where the incumbent is facing a competitive race.

Compare your interest in this race to your interest in the national presidential election. Are you ready to choose our next governor?

I am more interested in the state gubernatorial race than the national one. It is almost a forgone conclusion that Obama will take this state. With the tight race for governor, every vote will count.

Yes. Because with Gregoire, we finally got forward movement on important civil rights legislation. With Rossi, that's over.

On a side note, it looks like Rossi has endorsed Obama. I just saw one of his video billboards that said:
"Voting for Obama? We need change in Olympia, too! Rossi, GOP."

YA, only this time it looks like the State will wise up and finally elect ROSSI.

That, and measures have been strengthened to keep Queen Christine and her little wanna-bees from corruptibly stealing the election again....

The State Democrats are busy at McNeil Island registering new voters.

Civil libertarians DO need to remember that it is not only the BIAW wing of the BIAW-Craswell coalition that is a threat.

Privacy rights include gay rights, and Rossi's obesiance to right-wing religious nuts makes a vote for Rossi a threat to gay rights, and therefore to ALL CIVIL LIBERTIES.

It's a "boundary issue." Rossi keeps the state neutered where it needs to be strong (regulating the BIAW) and keeps the state intrusive where it should retreat (private lives, including gay lives).

Rossi is entirely wrong.

Gregoire is a much better choice for what are the values of Washington State ...the people that care about Washington will not vote for Rossi.

"the people that care about Washington will not vote for Rossi."

An offensive and inaccurate OPINION: Certainly not a statement of FACT. As a lifelong Washingtonian, I resent such an outright lie.

I voted against Gregoire the first time because frankly, her record as Attorney General had been ABYSMAL. Did nobody remember the David Brame case? Or the 1/2 dozen state DSHS suits which cost our state tens of millions, all of while under the A.G.'s direct oversight? Sure, Gregoire crowed about winning a huge tobacco settlement, and pledged that the money would go EXPRESSLY towards anti-tobacco education.

Then, once she became governor, she amended it, saying it would just go towards education.

Then, whenever our state legislature decided they needed funds, they dipped into the honeypot of the tobacco settlement--which had ended up in the GENERAL FUND--and Gregoire saw fit to sign their spending bills, effectively negating any such promises she had made earlier.

She has proven her ineptness as governor, with outright lies to the voters, and by abdication of authority on key issues such as the viaduct and the 520 bridge.

I care DEEPLY about Washington state, and am mad as heck that she has so adeptly proven all of my initial misgivings were RIGHT, and she has driven this state into the ground.

My vote--again!--will be for Rossi. And it will be against whoever runs against Gregoire, until she is voted out of office.

I wouldn't say this is a 'verbatim replay' of the '04 contest. there have been lots of changes both on and off the political playing field. this is a totally different election

as usual, the NY Times got it wrong.

Do you have any examples Mr. or Mrs. Unregistered User? You comment told me absolutely nothing.

Why does it matter if we're ready to vote? If the PI had its way, there would be no elections and Obama and Gregoire would be crowned forever.

The media has really made me sick this election. Do your damn job, and quit slanting toward once side or the other.

well, for one thing, the economy is in a very different condition than it was 4 years ago.

the failing of an econonmy is usually blamed on the incumbent. Gregoire did not have this to contend with in the previous election.

the candidates are still the same otherwise. most people will probably vote for who they did previously, but this difference alone could give Rossi the edge.

Obama and Gregoire have a great deal in common.

McCain and Rossi have a great deal in common.

It makes little sense to vote for the combination of Obama and Rossi or the combination of McCain and Gregoire.

Not quite the same election for me this time. I voted for Rossi in '04. I wont vote for him this time.
Nor will I vote for any republicans this time around. Problem is, they all seem to be corrupt (politically and morally) right wing whack jobs.
I know of quite a few new ex-republicans. I dont think this is going to be as close as '04.
Final: Rossi 48%, Gregiore 52%.
The republicans seem to be clueless as to how much support they have lost, especially east of the mountains.

Dear "Me em," #192301 is correct.

The Republicans are so corrupted by serving the super-rich, and clamoring right-wing religion to rally their dwindling mass support, that electoral oblivion is the proper response.

Republicans need to find some vision of the GENERAL GOOD to promote. They have none.

They offer particular wrongs, to the benefit of one particularly vicious sector of society -- the sociopathic super-wealthy.

However, the Republican party has many NEW faces--myself included--because we saw hope for the Republicans from a man who holds to the OLD party values (fiscal conservatism and LESS government interference in social issues) in Republican Ron Paul. One of the very few who actually cares about things like restoring a sound economy and civil liberties...and following the Constitution.

Rossi, though the devil we don't know, is CERTAINLY a better choice to get Washington through troubled economic times than Gregoire has proven to be, not to mention someone who will actually GET THINGS DONE when it comes to the Viaduct and 520.

She had her chance, and blew it, much as Bush did at the national level. It's time for change here, too!

Me em: Ron Paul supporters must form the basis of a new Republican Party.

His anti-war, anti-drug-war, libertarianism is a large unrepresented position (people). But Ron Paul, like the nutty libertarians of the 1960's and 1970's, whom Reagan replaced with the religious-right, is just too anti-government on economic regulation. You will need a non-crazy approach to economic regulation to become an active force.
