Archie McPhee knows where it's going

A couple weeks ago Seattle novelty shop Archie McPhee announced its lease was up and it was leaving Ballard.

Picture

Now we know where it's going -- Stone Way and 45th St. Right on the border between Fremont and Wallingford.

Think it'll fit in?

MyBallard has a post, and we're working on a story. Stay tuned for more.

Update: Here's Dan Richman's story. The bad news for Archie fans: "The new store will have less than half the space of the old one: 4,300 square feet versus 10,000 square feet."

Isnt that about where it used to be?

It's just about 10 blocks north of the old (pre-Ballard) location. IIRC, the old cross-streets were 36th & Stone Way...

Should have dug a bit further first: per a photo on the history page of the Archie McPhee web site, the old address was 3534 Stone Way N.

Looks like a perfect spot for them! Glad they found some new digs.

Would that be within where the old Salsa Bar/Danceroom Restaurant used to be? It is right there at 45th and Stoneway and has been vacant for years, it seems.

Less than half the size of the current space... but does the latter figure include the second storefront next door? Because the merchandise on that side is sparser, by far, and (I think?) primarily party supplies, rather than knickknacks.

Yeah, jope, that "annex" always seemed like an afterthought to me. And the one person working there was always either too stoned or too busy with the cellphone to help. I always thought of it as the training ground for real Archie McPhee's employees (not that they weren't any less distracted/stoned).

Buxtehude, I think that the new location is across the street from that gigolo place (err, private salsa dance lessons at $75/hour) called Beso del Sol. The old liquor store. Two blocks north, there used to be a cute Italian dineria, a seedy bar (the bar is still there, but it's been gentrified), and some crazy bingo on Saturday nights.

I shop at both Archie Mcphee stores all the time and I've never noticed any stoned employees. They've always been helpful and amusing. There are definitely some goofy folks working there though, for sure.
I think the move is a good one. It will be revitalizing for the store to get back to its smaller roots and old neighborhood. Plus Ballard is getting pretty annoying.

Nobody suspects the Fremont Pirate Kidnapping of Archie McPhee!

Arrr!

Glad they're back, back, in the Fremont Republic!
