TransUnion - one of those mean consumer credit reporting agencies - has been doing some nasty stuff. Like selling your personal data to third parties without permission.
Now, here's the good part. More likely than not, you qualify for free goodies!
The short version of the story: A class action lawsuit was filed against the company and, though TransUnion admits no wrongdoing, it's creating a $75 million fund to compensate customers.
The settlement class includes anyone who held a credit account or line of credit (things like credit cards, car loans or student loans) between 1987 and May 28, 2008.
Um ... that would be pretty much everyone in the country.
You can get free credit monitoring or register for a cash payment if there's money available once the settlement passes muster.
But in this case, time really might be money. You have until Tuesday to register for benefits at https://www.listclassaction.com/.
While you're at it, do a Google search for "class action settlement." You may be entitled to benefits from other settlements such as this one involving Weyerhaeuser Hardboard Siding, or this bizarre settlement involving the makers of the Grand Theft Auto video game series (although it has to be rewritten after a court declined to approve the agreement).
And remember, even if you don't qualify for a settlement, if you live in the U.S. you're still entitled to free stuff! Like a free credit report annually, for instance.
Thanks to consumerist.com for tipping us off to this.

Moises made some good points, but OUR opinion is that you should choose the option for six free months of credit monitoring AND whatever is left in the settlement fund. That's right, if there's cash left over in the settlement fund they're splitting it among all those who choose that option. What, you don't want the credit monitoring? OK, that's fine, you can just choose the option for cash.
So, why NOT select the option for free money? Yes, you might get Zippo if the settlement fund is exhausted. . . BUT, you might get something. . . All for spending sixty seconds and filling out the online form. Easy as that.
Check out our full report on it here:

Did you know that one day in January some leading department stores will be giving away free cosmetics due to a price fixing settlement? Yes, it's true. Also, Verizon is refunding many of the ETFs charged in the past 9 years. Why not claim yours if you were charged?
If you want to be kept in the loop of the LATEST settlements, make sure to join the newsletter list. Some more good ones just came down the pipe and will be posted soon.
