Free dance lessons at area high schools

A Shoreline woman is spearheading a campaign to teach dance at Seattle-area high schools -- for free.

DANCE IT, a program sponsored by the nonprofit Northwest Dance Network, enlists a network of professional instructors to offer four free hour-long weekly swing-dance lessons to any school willing to give it a space and an after-school time slot.

"Our goal is not to create dancers, necessarily, but just introduce a new alternative to kids, and if anything, to get them over the fear of dancing -- especially young men," said Lise Baadh, a dancer for 15 years who started bringing free dance lessons to schools two years ago.

"We wanted to eliminate any obstacle, any reason a kid would have for not learning to dance."

Baadh first organized dance lessons at Shorewood High School in 2006. Then last year, DANCE IT taught lessons to Meadowdale, Shorecrest and Nathan Hale high schools.

"We don't expect any money from the students," Baadh said. "We would like the general public to think it's a great idea and support it."

Want to make a donation or ask DANCE IT to come to your school? Visit the program's Web site.
