Pagliacci isn't laughing at postcard pizza prank

Picture
This is the back of one of the old Pagliacci Pizza postcards sent to pizza places all over Seattle in an apparent prank. (Provided by Suzuki + Chou Communimedia)

Pizzerias all over Seattle got some unusual - and somewhat offensive - postcards in the mail this week.

Addressed to "stupid competitor," the postcards appear to be from Pagliacci Pizza.

But they're not, said Pagliacci co-owner Matt Galvin. At least, the familiar Seattle pizza chain didn't send them. They're apparently part of some anonymous joke. And Pagliacci is left to do damage control.

"Once we realized this is more than two places, we called every pizza place in Seattle and said, 'Hey, you might have gotten this,'" Galvin said. "'We had nothing to do with it.'"

Galvin and another staffmember made about 40 calls to area pizzerias and believe the postcards - which Pagliacci staff began to hear about as early as Tuesday night - went out to at least as many places.

Blue in front and bearing a promotion on the back, the postcards were part of a promotion from Pagliacci's 25th anniversary four years ago. They haven't been in Pagliacci stores or offices for years, Galvin said. That makes him believe they must have come from some prankster who found them in a Dumpster and held onto them until now.

Calls to Mad Pizza, Zeeks Pizza and Delfino's Pizza confirmed that the postcards had been received - sometimes coldly - but with no hard feelings once Pagliacci called.

"We saw it, we laughed, we threw it away," said Nick Hinkleman at Delfino's.

The postcards were postmarked Aug. 18 and reached pizzerias as far as South Park. Pagliacci is working with the post office to find the source.

Note to self: To mail free postcards, label it from Pagliacci Pizza and use USPS Presorted Standard License #1932.

Pagliacci has OK pizza but I miss the Shakeys on the waterfront. Also, Pizza & Pipes had cool atmosphere.

Why are all the Godfathers disappearing?

#168517

Posted by Roosevelt at 8/21/08 8:14 p.m.

There's 21 Godfathers Pizzas within 200 miles of here, and 8 within 50 miles. None in Seattle anymore. There used to be one near the waterfront, one on Broadway, and one on 145th and 15th NE. All gone now. Why? I blame trans-fat. Godfather's used so much oil! Pag's has good crust, but by-the-slice it's gotten too expensive to pay $4.00 for a skimpy slice with one piece of chicken on top. Might as well pay $5 and get a big meaty Gyro, or spend $6 and get a plate of Teriyaki. I still like Pag's, though, If I were to order a whole pie for a special occasion, I'd bite the bullet on the cost and get the most reliable pizza in town.

I bet it was a disgruntled former employee.
Although, it's quite funny.
This is one of those prank that's only done for entertainment purpose since I see no gain to the prankster.
But I'm sure somebody is smiling while reading this article.

Godfathers (and Shakeys) have a great all-u-can-eat buffet.

I wish Pagliacci's had an all-u-can-eat buffet along with some cool video games.

As an ex employee, I'd be happy to think this is a prank pulled by one of many ex employees that hated doing their "marketing" - spamming neighborhood doorknobs and mailboxes with this unwanted trash just to get more money off every delivery.

#168529

Posted by unregistered user at 8/21/08 8:40 p.m.

Heh heh, that's a pretty good prank. Is it bad form to keep it in mind, since it'd be copying if I did it to another place? :)

(Comment number one, funny!)

Hey Ted, there's a little pizza joint on 53rd NE and Roosevelt that has free video games and pinball. The pizza on about the same level as Godfathers, and is sold by the slice at a reasonable price. They serve beer, too.
I do miss the salad bar at Godfather's, though, that was a real sweet deal: a full choice of ingredients, including ham, bacon, potato salad and cherry tomatoes, among lots of other fresh good stuff. With the price of produce now, I doubt any restaurant could afford an all-you-can-eat salad bar. Too bad. Good Times, I used to work at Godfather's in college, doing deliveries. Back when gas was $1 a gallon. Fun job, although I got tired of the pizza really quick.

Round Table is sorely missed in Seattle. The best big chain pizza in my humble opinion.

I guess in this day and age of disgruntled ex-employees utilizing rifles and such, we should be glad this was "just a postcard."

It's not as funny as having your sister mock up some letterhead and sending a mind-bending letter to your soon-to-be ex-husband, though. That's what I've heard, anyway.

the King of Kings was Pizza and Pipes. The pizza was ok, but the Organ ruled.
If that place was open these days it would be packed. Good ol Greenhood

I love Pagliacci. My wife and I recently placed an order with them for home delivery. As usual, they said hello by name and asked if wanted the same thing we had last time. Yes, my wife, said, that being a medium pizza (log the Agog, lots of garlic), a Pagliacci salad (love that, too, tons of garbanzo beans) and a pint of that awesome gelato.

About 30 minutes later, the delivery guy cheerfully bounded up our steps, asked how we were doing and said, "This one's on us -- thanks for being such great customers."

No joke. About a $38 order or something. We or course tipped the driver a $10 spot and later figured that since we had made a few big orders through our business under the same name, we reached a certain threshhold and got a freebie.

I already loved them. Love them more now.

If you're gonna go old school, you have to go with Pizza Haven... deivered in huge Chevy pick-ups with heated ovens in the beds. Always a hot pizza, no matter how long it took, but this was before even Dominos was in town. We got ours from the Northgate Way location, roughly where the Tony Roma's is today.

We too have been the happy recipient of the free $35 dollar Pagliacci. It is always fresh and friendly. As a matter of fact it has happened twice. The second time was the night I had to put my 14-year-old cat to sleep. It sure helped.

Thanks 137th street crew!

I think thier product is "alright". I've been a customer if thiers since they opened on "the ave" a few decades ago. BUT, they have gotten a little full of themselves though. If you leave a credit card behind, you cannot contact a particular store or it's manager by phone. For a regional company, routing customers through thier corporate phone tree is WANNABE HACK. Are they afraaid of some pizza terrorism?! By the time I got through to somebody, I just decided to drive all the way back to the store, only to find a bunch of shoulders shrugging. Half a day & a credit card; lost. Thanks guys ( actually, I think it was a gal that started this joint ).

As long as this is turning into "what's the best pie", let me just offer this:
ABRUZZI'S PIZZA!!!
now destroyed to make way for a puketastic tennis shoe "boutique".
Another piece of idiosyncratic Seattle lost to the City Hall commercial real estate suck-ups. Choke on your chain store tax base with extra provincial cheese.

What a crappy thing to do. Pagliacci and Zeeks make my favorite pizzas, hands down.

But I have a soft spot for Round Table. Worked there in college and learned a lot about handling fresh ingredients.

Funny Prank. There is no such thing as bad publicity. If we're throwing around great pizza places...

1. Godfathers is missed greatly
2. Isn't there still a Round Table in the University Village (U District)?
3. They serve a great pizza at Bills Off Broadway (Pine & Harvard)

I've tried Papa John's, which was ok but nothing to write home about. I'm always getting Garlic Jim's advertising in my mail or on my door knob. Can anyone who's tried theirs comment on their experience?

Also, anyone tried Piecora's NY Pizza or Boston Wood Fired Pizza?

Everyone used to rave about Northlake Tavern's pizza, but doesn't sound like it's as good as it used to be.

Is there anyplace to get a good Chicago-style pie around here? (Yes, I'm a transplant.) Like Lou Malnati's or Father and Son? I went to the Pizzaria Uno in Lynnwood (I think that's where it is), and was unimpressed.

WC51, Garlic Jim's is very good, but in my opinion too expensive for chain pizza.

I can wait...

for previous poster, 7Null_Seven, the best chicago style pizza i've had here is wallingford pizza, home of the dome, on 45th, near the guild theater. i've only had the deepdish once there, as i'm addicted to the dome now, toppings cooked in a bowl with the dough on top, then they come to the table and turn it all upside down, and you have your own personal, kinda deep dish style pizza. it's delicious.

my favorite regular pizza joint is hot mama's. i love almost everything they make. which explains the 30 lbs i gained in the year i moved to within a block away from them. year 2 promises minimal trips to hot mama's and lots of time on the elliptical to reverse this unfortunate course of events.

Once I called Pags bombed out of my mind and ordered 3 large pizzas & salad. In my ramblings, I asked if that would be enough food for 6 people. The guy was kind enough to down sell me and let me know that 2 mediums and a salad would suffice.

I then thanked him redundently and asked to speak to his manager. I then repeated the same compliments to the manager for about 5 minutes. She was gracious and didn't mind the drunk guy expressing gratitude about one of her employees.

The best pizza used to be at Lena's on Park Street in Hartford, CT. I haven't been there in years, so I don't know if it's still any good. Everything else is basically just school-lunch-pizza.

#168778

Posted by Zen_Sorcere at 8/22/08 10:26 a.m.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be an ex-employee. I worked there years ago, and I loved the place, personally. I didn't have any problems with the management, business practices, or the products. Some folks did, but most of them had attitude issues anyway, so take from that what you will.

As I understand it, most pizza places have the drivers hang doorknob adverts. Someone (another ex-employee) above was really disgruntled about that, but I know of friends who have worked for other pizza companies, and the same thing happens everywhere.

As for deep dish pizza: I don't know if it's "chicago" style or not, but Delfino's in the U-village has some delicious pizzas that I absolutely love. They are definitely more o a deep dish/pan style pizza. Just awesome stuff.

Close to chicago style is All Purpose Pizza in the CD. They make dough, hand toss etc. Super kid friendly with a play area. Local ownership, etc. All the things Seattlites crave to support. Delivery to Columbia City where there is a void for pizza (I'm sorry but I am over the Tutta Bella thing...nothing like a cracker crust). After that, Godfathers....(but they are no where to be found)_

7Null_Seven, I also suggest that you try Delfino's. They have a Chicago-style deep dish. It nothing compared to Due, but it's the best pizza in town. It might pass for a native Chicagoan. I recommend the spinach.

#168812

ryantodd: The Round Table near University Village, along with every other building on the same block (except for one small condo complex) was torn down and will soon be replaced with a huge retirement community (which is nearing completion).

The whole block in question used to be the creek bed for Ravenna Creek. But I'm sure that's nothing to worry about, right?

#168813

Posted by unregistered user at 8/22/08 11:31 a.m.

Delfino's in U Village is the best Chicago-style deep dish pizza I have ever had. The secret to Delfy's is calling ahead, since their stuffed pies take 35-40 minutes to cook.

The Round Table in U Village is no more, a victim of Seattle's lust for condos.

Pizza Factory has the best pizza in my opinion. Don't know if there's one in Seattle or not, but there's one here in Port Orchard. "We toss 'em, they're awesome" is their slogan and it's true.

#168796, I wouldn't exactly call Issaquah the "hinterlands."

Anyhow, yeah, Pagliacci's is the best. I've loved it ever since I got hooked on it years ago at their kitchen in the UW HUB. I've tried other pizza in Seattle and none of it can best Pagliacci, IMHO (in my hungry opinion).

#168839

I totally agree with the commenter who said, "Dude/dudes should get a life and do something more constructive." Honestly, what do we gain, personally, by trying to undermine companies -- especially ones like Pagliacci that are conscientious and use green methods?

#168843

Pizza and Pipes...what a memory. I used to work there in high school (Greenwood location) and laugh every time I think of having to dress up in a Minnie Mouse costume and run around the dining room to the tune of "It's a Small World" and shake hands with the kids (and a Mickey Mouse partner). It used to mortify me as a teenager but now I'd do it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, as an ex-employee...I agree about the pizza. It was just plain bad...and I'm a native Seattle-ite...not a transplant.

yeah, Abruzzi's on Pike was killer... they'd spin the dough right in the window so everyone walking by could watch. Cheeser or Pep slices only, 1.25 and 1.50, and they were HUGE! Full pizzas had all the works you could want. Great place.

Now it's just the beggars begging and bums being insane and "gangsters" with their big chips on their shoulders and scared convention-goers walking by as fast as they can.

Progress and diversity are great!

Oh yeah now Spiro's is pretty good, and I am surprised nobody's mentioned the Northlake!!!

Pagliacci Pizza slices: $2.40 pepperoni slice / 2 slices = a little over $5 with tax. This whole $4 a slice thing is a little misguided. And Pagliacci uses local ingredients and most agree: has the best crust in town.

My friend from New York was in town a month ago: "They should open a Pagliacci's in Manhattan - they would kill it"

Pizza and pipes...what a great place to have bday parties as a kid. Loved it.

Pagliacci rocks. If you want a simple cheese pizza (parents of toddler, you know who you are!), theirs is awesome--clearly good quality cheese and sauce.

Shakey's--yes, there's one on Fairwood, and it sucks. Gross, greasy, salty, revolting.

I like a thin crust, and Palomino's downtown is pretty good (ok, it's not really a pizza chain). For thick crust--yep, it's Wallingford or Delfy's. I pretty much just make my own these days!

For anyone who went to Oregon State--remember Woodstock's? Now, THAT was some seriously good pie!
