Local fans mourn Dave Matthews Band saxophonist

Fans are mourning the death of LeRoi Moore, saxophone player for the Dave Matthews Band. The 46-year-old died Tuesday of complications resulting from a June all-terrain vehicle accident.

"Thoughts and prayers out to DMB and LeRoi's family," a Western Washington University student wrote on a group page on Facebook.

Moore's mostly Virginia-based band has connections in Seattle. Matthews, a native of South Africa, told P-I music critic Gene Stout Seattle feels like home because he started his family here. His two twin daughters, Stella Busina and Grace Anne, were born here in 2001.

The band - Matthews, Moore, bassist Stefan Lessard, violinist Boyd Tinsley and drummer Carter Beauford - have made shows at The Gorge in George, along the Columbia River in Central Washington, an annual tradition. Matthews has called the venue, a band favorite, "heaven's amphitheater."

The band went on with a show Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Another saxophonist, Jeff Coffin, has been sitting in for Moore on the band's summer tour.

No word yet on any changes to their next performance at the Gorge Aug. 29.

Have you been to a DMB concert? What will you remember about Moore?

Update: The band played its first show in Seattle July 17, 1994 at the Backstage Tavern in Ballard. Boyd's violin was reportedly smashed during the encore break. Here's the show's setlist. Thanks to Casey McNerthney for the link.

FYI — The band's next Gorge show will be Aug. 29, not Oct. 29.

I've been a Dave Matthews Band fan for more than ten years and have seen over 30 shows with LeRoi. The news was devestating. I'm scheduled to see the band on Friday in Chula Vista and if the show goes on, it just won't be the same.

You also omitted DMB's bass player, Stefan Lessard.

FYI You omitted Stefan Lessard and Dave's son, August Oliver, who was born in Seattle in 2007.

The loss of Leroi means the death of an era with DMB. They have been a pivotal part of my life and certainly had a profound impact on the music world - Leroi was a huge part of that. My sadness and condolences to his family. May Leroi rest in peace and NEVER be forgotten.

It was August of 2000. It was the second time of what is eight now that I have seen them live, and I was in the very front row at the Gorge.

Dave not known to say much other than "thank you" to the crowd, went on to rant about how much spam they eat in Hawaii. And then to mention how much Leroi loved his spam, saying "that's twoo much spam for one man"

I even have a copy of that show on CD, and wrote an English paper a few years later about it in college.

I see them every gorge - and they are incredible musicians, individually and as a group. And LeRoi was so great at what he did. He'll be missed.

I went to see them last year at the Gorge. My first introduction to the group. Before that I enjoyed some of his music but not all. After seeing the live show, I understood the music better.

Kingmob. Evidentally you do not enjoy the DMB experience. It is too bad that you would use the death of a man to express your displeasure. In the future I think it would be better if you found something nice to say instead of using this to put down your own, backhanded stabs.

I have been a DMB fan for well over a decade - back when they were just a local band. No music makes me feel joy the way their music does....so last night when I heard about LeRoi's passing - I was veery sad - my first instinct was to reach for my DMB CD's and listen to the music that always lifted my spirits. I paused...because I knew if I heard one of LeRoi's beautiful sax solo's - I would immediately be brought to tears...I listened anyway, and was. But quickly I found myself filled with the familiar joy I had felt before...with tears, sobbing and feeling like I had lost a friend - the magic of what they do anyway - move people with their music - was there.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the DMB Family and with all the fans who feel like I do today.

Kingmob - you are an idiot with no heart or compassion - that's why you don't like their music - you can't relate.

Don't anyone sweat Kingmob - just another idiot, or perhaps a future convert once he (she?) sees them live. As an SPU student and Dave fan in 94, I had the opportunity to go the Backdoor show and skipped it - can't remember why, but it goes on my short list of worst choices ever.
I hate celeb mourning, but I have to say that I've reacted in a strong way to Leroi's death. I just think that the band puts out such incredible music, their way, and that anything that jeopardizes their future hurts us all. Just last year, as we drove back from our annual weekend with the band at the Gorge, that "someday this won't happen" due to changes with the band. I had NO idea it would be so soon.
Everyone who had the chance to work with Leroi, and even those of us who heard him, will miss what he brought - but the cool thing is that his legacy will live always through his incredible music. That's what keeping me upbeat today.

I was at that July 17, 1994 show at The Backstage in Ballard. Later that year, in November I believe, they returned for another show there at The Backstage, and before the show, I sat at the bar off to the side in the main stage room. LeRoi was sitting next to me, just relaxing with a drink. He was as pleasant as a guy could be, not above chatting with me, or anyone else who approached him with respect. He played a big part in the success of DMB.
RIP
