Seattle ranked 6th hardest drinking city

Forbes Magazine has ranked America's hardest drinking cities, andSeattle comes in essentially tied with Cleveland and St. Louis at no. 6 - behind cities like Chicago, Providence, R.I. and no. 1 Austin, Texas.

The rankings were based on the number of drinks residents said they'd had, and how often they'd had them.

According to Forbes, 64.2 percent of Seattle residents surveyed said they'd had at least one drink in the last 30 days, and 16.4 percent said they'd had five or more drinks on one occasion.

Forbes cautions:

Of course, just because a city ranks high on the list doesn't make it a den of debauchery. A top-drinking town could be populated by health-conscious adults who sip a glass of wine a day in order to keep their hearts healthy. And just downing a few cold ones doesn't make a person irresponsible.

Yeah, this is a poor test.

Seattle is extremely lame as party cities go. There's almost no debauchery to speak of, other than weird, seedy stuff like prostitution. No hot college chicks partying downtown, like in Austin or New Orleans.

rcdurden - thanks for your Seattle and Worldly wisdom.

rc, when you become an adult you'll come to realize that partying extends beyond hot college chicks (although the hot college chick phase had its perks). I've seen harder drinking at suburban golf courses than anything I saw in college. Trust me, that's saying a lot.

Actualy drinking helps the appearance of many the women here.

where the hell was Tacoma on this list. Everyone knows that those 40 ouncers add up to something. And probably more than one per day of those who consume them.

All you Seattle prohibition enablers please stand back and let WSU show you how we party in your Thornton Water Shed. Thanks for the ordinance that the property owner has to clean it up.

not surprised to hear that the town is hard drinking, there isn't much else to do in an otherwise indoor climate. as far as "den of debauchery" that is hardly Seattle either, this is city has the cultural traits of being weirdly cold, repressive, and passive-aggressively hostile. as far as north american coastal cities go, seattle is one of the worst for festivities/partying/etc.

Seattle is good for drinking in that we have much better taste in our beers. I mean, I havent been to many other cities where you can pick up a top notch belgian 755ml bottle in a convenience store.

But as debauchery goes, the city is way too repressed and everyone takes themselves too seriously to have a good time. You are only allowed to have a "chill" time.

I completely agree. Seattle is, well it is just weird. The only US city I've been to that is icier is Philadelphia. Austin is one Hell of a party town with a great night life. I think the most fun city in the nation when you factor everything to have a drink in your hand is Chicago, warm, genuine, approachable people who will tell you their life story over a beer whether you want to hear it or not. If you want real quality nightlife, you need to go to Vancouver B.C.

When observing rain, clouds and little sun for 10 of 12 months each year, I'm surprised we're not #1. Happy Hour(s) anyone?

Of course seattle is lame. How can a bunch of uptight politically-correct pompous psuedointellectual "bohemian" stoners convinced of the rosy smell of their own flatulence have any fun... or allow anyone else to have any fun?

screw them. Pour me another glass of gin

"Actualy drinking helps the appearance of many the women here."

ActualLy, I'd call you a functional illiterate but I'd hate to demean all the true functional illiterates that have worked so hard.

Technically, I believe you meant that the more YOU drink, the better the women look which, now that I think about it, goes a great distance in explaining your stellar diction and (apparently) low hit rate.

Seattle's also the lesbian capital of the world, isn't it? (And not the good kind of lesbian... Seattle has the fat ones with birkenstocks, little boy haircuts and surly attitudes, right?) Makes sense that the city would be a bunch of boozers - all those disappointed men having to import our straight girls from Spokane.

Or perhaps your idiot governor is to blame (don't look at us, OUR side of the state sure as heck didn't vote for her!) God knows everytime I hear her open her yap and blather about the next oppressive socialist policy or tax hike she proposes, I want to go running for the bottle as well!

Also, how hilarious is it that Seattle tied with Cleveland. I always said those two should be sister cities. They're totally alike in SO many ways.

"Seattle is good for drinking in that we have much better taste in our beers. I mean, I havent been to many other cities where you can pick up a top notch belgian 755ml bottle in a convenience store."

And people wonder why folks say Seattlites are pretentious clucks.

I'm sure by "convenience store" you meant "Whole Foods Market," huh?

I'm not surprised. Seattle has become very anti family for many years now. The more liberal the city becomes the more of an exodus the familys make for the suburbs. With a higher percentage of singles in the city it becomes more of a social gathering. Don't actually care myself I do not spend time in the city unless I must show visitors the highlights. Won't spend my money here though, to many better burb's to suite me.
