There's a bit of a scandal brewing at our hometown airline's call center.
Alaska Airlines is informing customers that one of its call center employees misused credit card data between August 2006 and June of this year.
When processing reservation changes, the employee allegedly diverted payments into her own personal bank account instead of the airline's. The fraud affects about 1,500 customers, according to Alaska.
There's no evidence yet that anyone was overcharged or that credit card information was sold to criminals. But the incident is creating talk among frequent flyers.
Consumers would do well to monitor their card statements and credit reports for fraud. Law enforcement has launched an investigation into the matter.
You can find out if you're one of the unlucky victims of the scheme by calling the airline at 1800-401-5403.
Alaska has helpful suggestions for worried consumers here.

If the airlines simply inserted a subroutine in their software they could easily prevent this sort of thing from happening.
