If you're a leisure traveler (or a business traveler looking to save some money), chances are you've visited kayak.com sometime recently.
Now, American Airlines is yanking its tickets off the popular Web site. The situation has been widely reported in the mainstream media but a recent e-mail I received from the airline indicates that the situation is heating up.
American is mad because the site, as well as its sister site sidestep.com, shows other Web fares from sites like cheaptickets.com alongside fares at American's own site own site.
American just sent me an e-mail because it can somehow tell that I clicked through from Kayak to aa.com.
It crows about leaving Kayak. But besides calling me a "valued customer" and urging me to go directly to the airline site, the e-mail doesn't say much.
This spat is inevitably going to burn some Seattlelites because the airline often has the lowest fares from Sea-Tac to important cities like Dallas or destinations Central and South America, where the airline is particularly strong.
Especially in tech-savvy cities like Seattle, Kayak has been doing all the work for us for a while. Now when you compare airfares you're going to have to check out American separately.

I also used to subscribe to the notion that real Seattleites don't use umbrellas, but then I decided that I'd rather be dry than a real Seattleite"
