Sonics: Oklahoma considering six NBA team names

Assuming you still want to hear about the baskeball team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics, the Oklahoman today reported that the NBA has filed trademarks for six team nicknames in Oklahoma City - Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind.

Sources there believe the strongest candidate is still "Thunder." The NBA is admitting nothing.

"When we have a name the Oklahoma City team will announce it," NBA spokesman Tim Frank told the paper. "The process is ongoing. We're not going to get into specifics until it's time to reveal the name."

I know it's painful to ask, but what the heck - which of the six do you prefer?

Monica -- Is that nickname the Barons or is the full name 'The Robber Barons'

Energy, definitely. It makes them sound like a traveling dance group.

Lots of NBA teams have terrible names -- think the Magic, Jazz or Heat -- and it looks like OKC plans to follow suit.

Of course, some of the most storied teams in the league have names that don't sound particularly marketable at first glance (like the Lakers, Knicks, Celtics or the 76ers) while teams with better names (Timberwolves, Grizzlies or the Rockets) are nonentities.

The moral of the story is that history and performance matters a lot more than names do. Here's hoping the Thunder (or whatever) will be "rebuilding" for decades.

Out of those six, Barons and Marshalls seem to come off as the least unlikeable. Thunder makes the least amount of sense, since the Golden State Warriors have a "thunder" theme going on, so hopefully that one doesn't stick.

Unlike the mediocrity that marks Seattle sports, Oklahoma has a rich tradition of winning. I'll be there when the team formally known as the supersonics win their first championship in OKC and I'll be thinking of all you sorry Seattlites. And as for hockey, I bet we in OKC gain a team long before your city does.

None of those really have the intimidation factor needed for a really aggressive team name. Names like the Raiders, Marauders, Pirates, etc. inspire more fear in opponents. But the "wind"? Really? Sounds like a light breeze.

What about something more specific, like the Bombers?

I think the "Outlaws" is a great name -- it moves Oklahoma past the oil & Indian history. Also is alliterative!

I LIKE STALLIONS!

ALTERNATVIES COULD BE:

THE OKLAHOMA BOYS
THE OKLAHOMA CHAMPS
THE OKLAHOMA DOMINATORS
THE OKLAHOMA ZENITH
THE OKLAMONA EMPIRE
THE OKLAHOMA EMPORERS
THE OKLAHOMA PRESIDENTS

I WOULD LOVE COMMENTATORS TO SAY, WHEN REFERRING TO THIS NEW NAMED TEAM ... "THE CHAMPS ARE DONG WELL", OR THE "DOMINATORS" ARE ON TOP, ETC.
