How our photog got that awesome moon pic

Picture
Visitors to the Space Needle enjoy a nearly full moon as it rises over Seattle Thursday. (Grant Haller/Seattle P-I)

"I find the surprise of looking up in the sky and seeing a full moon a delight," wrote P-I photographer Grant Haller in response to an e-mail I sent him about the stunning photo of the Space Needle and the moon that graced our local cover today.

Over the years, Haller said, he's "chased the moon" through the streets and alleys of Queen Anne, always trying to catch the two together.

Finally, at Kerry Park, with his Canon Mark II Digital Camera and Canon 600mm f.4 lens, he did it.

"I'd checked the time the moon was coming up (8:32 p.m.) and knew that it would take till around 8:45 p.m. to completely clear the Cascade Mountains. I was hoping it would be a little lower but the image worked," he wrote. "My exposure was set on the moon with the idea of increasing the exposure on the Space Needle, but there was enough available light from the sunset that I didn't have to light it up.

"Once again, chasing the moon turned out a very nice photograph."

600mm F4 huh. I just got my first L lens (f4 70-200 IS). Gonna have to wait a while and save up for that one! At least I can hand hold mine. :-)

Nice pic.

What was your exposure time + f/stop?

I was on the bus crossing the Aurora Bridge the evening that particular full moon was just rising. (looking east along the Ship Canal) It was so lovely, people were whispering "wow... look at the moon" and the normally rowdy 358 bus clientele became rather quiet and reverent... So I was especially pleased to see that photograph above. What a terrific shot!

impressive, though i think i'd have waited for the moon to rise a touch higher above the Needle... is this cropped, or full frame? i've tried to achieve that foreshortening effect with my 100-400L on a 1.6x body, which yields 640mm effective length, but i haven't been able to get it to come out as well. maybe i need more distance between me and the foreground subject...
