Reader: 'Spam King' Soloway should 'work his behind off'

The King of Spam could hear his sentence as early as today. But does his likely punishment fit his crime?

A U.S. district judge is expected to sentence 28-year-old Robert Alan Soloway on 37 counts of all sorts of bad stuff, from e-mail fraud to money laundering and tax evasion.

Soloway, the second person to be convicted of criminal spamming under a new law, could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and more than $500,000 in fines.

But in a letter to the editor, reader Robin Sims Fisher wonders if justice couldn't do one better. You agree?

I would rather see the "Spam King" have to work his behind off for the rest of his life to compensate for the crimes he has committed; to repay those he owes. He can't earn money behind bars.

Save the long jail sentences for violent offenders, instead of letting them out to harm people again, which many of them do.

As the the main writer for thisfool.com (a site that tracked Soloway) how might Robert Soloway 'work' - being that he paid no tax, defrauded many credit cards, ruined businesses reputations.

Spammed, ignored courts and the ftc why would you want this scumbag working ? What would you have him do ? run enron ?

I disagree. Saloway perpetrated his crimes on literally millions of victims. It is not feasible for him to repay the time lost and frustration caused to millions of victims. We must therefore be satisfied with some other punishment.

Violent offenders tend to affect small numbers of victims, but affect them very harshly. Spammers, in contrast, affect very very large numbers of people. If punishment of criminals is proportional to the total suffering caused to victims, then spammers need to do hard time to prevent them from causing millions of more people to suffer.

No mercy for the scumbag. He's the epitome of criminal activities.

Get real, people!!! How in the world can anyone compare violent crimes with the inconvenience of receiving spam??? Do anyone seriously feel that the millions and millions of taxpayer dollars spent prosecuting Mr. Soloway is justified by a few less junk emails?

As I understand it, he did not collect anyone's banking or credit information & drain their life savings, he did not use anyone's information in any way that would cause them any financial hardship, nor did he ever do any physical harm to any of his victims. He sent out unsolicited junk email, for Pete's sake! I simply don't understand why this is such a huge deal, or why it is considered such a serious crime. We all receive unsolicited junk mail regularly in the postal mail, but no one screams about invasion of privacy for that. What's the difference? I find it much more worrisome that at any time of the day or night, anyone who cares to can go on the Internet, Google for my address, and print out detailed driving directions to my front door, with alternate transportation options offered if needed. THAT'S what I consider a serious invasion of privacy. But junk email as a crime? Good grief! Those millions of dollars could have been spent on the Midwest flood victims, or the Katrina victims, or whatever else may befall this country at any time. Let's get our priorities straight!
