Secret Eddie Vedder shows in West Seattle

People who had purchased tickets for a screening of "Into the Wild" at Kenyon Hall in West Seattle Monday night were treated to a surprise performance by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, according to a report in Billboard magazine. A second show was Tuesday night.

Tickets to the screenings were a mere $5 at Easy Street Records. But only those who were in on the secret knew that Vedder would perform at the community theater on 35th Avenue West where theatergoers sit on folding chairs, usually to watch "Hokum Hall" vaudeville and variety shows.

Fewer than 150 attended the Vedder shows each night.

In a 90-minute performance, Vedder performed acoustic songs from the "Into the Wild," "Dead Man Walking" and "Harold & Maude" soundtracks, as well as songs by Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. Vedder, of course, wrote music for the "Into the Wild" soundtrack.

Vedder mostly played guitar, but used a banjo for a version of Cat Stevens' "If You Want to Sing Out." He also played mandolin, harmonica and ukulele on other songs, according to Billboard.

The surprise shows were a kickoff for Vedder's April solo West Coast tour, which doesn't include a Seattle concert, other than the two at Kenyon Hall.

Pearl Jam, meanwhile, will embark on a 10-date East Coast tour beginning June 11 in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Damn, I have to say I would have given my first and only born to have seen Eddie. I adore him and have always felt he is the most important songwriter/singer of my generation.

He actually 'jokingly' referred to himself as 'The Voice of a Generation' :) at the Kenyon Hall show on Tuesday.

I was one of the 14 people outside on the steps (mentioned in the Billboard.com piece). We're always full of hope when outside and ticketless... but I must say, this time I didn't think we were going to get in. When Matt (Easy Street Records owner) told us he was taking us all inside I was in shock... The show was amazing and I was honored to be there.

So, how does one become "in-the-know" about things such as this?

I heard something about a small show monday night, but thought it was at a house party and while I thought about cruising west seattle- it felt slightly stalkerish.

He is amazing in large venues, ( as is the whole band) and I love how he connects with people. It is very energizing to be part of, and I am very sorry to have missed these shows.
Looking forward to Santa Barbara however, and thinking about getting tickets for Vancouver too.
Play the Backstage Eddie! that seems very appropriate since I listen to you during every single workout! Gorge 06 is my favorite.
