Rossi still ahead of Gregoire in the online campaign

Back in November, we took an early look at the online networks built in support of Dino Rossi and Gov. Chris Gregoire ahead of the gubernatorial race.

Rossi had a stronger presence on MySpace and Facebook, boasting a greater number of "friends" on both sites than the Democratic governor, and the same is true today -- but with a new twist. The Rossi campaign recently bought ad space on Facebook -- using campaign funds to boost support they're already getting for free.

"It's hard to say if it's more effective or not," said Rossi campaign spokeswoman Jill Strait. "I think we're still playing with it."

The campaign spent a total of $50 on six ads that ran on and off from Feb. 1 to mid-March. One of the ads stated Gregoire had given up on the Sonics and was captured by local blogger Cameron Newland before it had run its course on Facebook. In all, 50 bucks got them 400 clicks, with no way of knowing whether those clicks got them any support. Still, the campaign thinks it was worth it.

"When the last race came down to 129 votes, we're looking for 129 votes wherever we can find them -- and maybe that's Facebook," said Strait.

Despite what they say is her opponent's head start, the Gregoire campaign isn't backing down.

"We believe these sites are critical, especially for younger voters. We're certainly working on that," said Gregoire campaign spokeswoman Debra Carnes. Gregoire is set to kick off her campaign the week of April 7, Carnes said. "She's just getting up and running in terms of the campaign herself, which means Rossi had all this time to get stuff running."

It's impossible to know to what degree online support, which largely targets youth, translates to votes. For what it's worth, here's where the candidates stand today:

Facebook group:

Dino Rossi for Governor '08: 725 members

Re-elect Gov. Chris Gregoire: 229 members

MySpace page:

Dino Rossi: 306 friends

Re-elect Gov. Chris Gregoire: 184 friends

Facebook fan pages:

Rossi: Created in November, 1,468 supporters

Gregoire: Created in March, 59 supporters

If voters decide this election based on the Sonics and their arena extortion scam, the state of Washington is indeed in dire straits. A Republican probably has to run on those sorts of issues to distract people from his actual policies. Gregoire isn't perfect, but at least she's not a Republican.

Maybe Dino can go to Oklahoma city with Clay Bennett.

Funny stuff.

Personally I think Dino would have more visibility with non-voting young people if he had tried out for "American Idol."

Can't wait to hear Gregoires concession speach....maybe she could use the same one she had last time before her party stole the election.

At least Dino demonstrates good leadership. Aside from what some of the ranking in the state say (which I do not believe) why hasn't she done anything about the 520, viaduct, traffic, Sonics, ferry system, and the school system. She is a wreck....

Go Dino!

All I really need to know about Dino Rossi is that 168,000 people who voted for John Kerry, Patty Murray, and any of our 6 Dmocrat Congessmen, in 2004, also voted for Dino Rossi over Christine Gregoire. My vote is still with Dino. Divided government is preferred over one party rule, just look at what happened from 2002-2006 in our national houses of government. Funny though, you'll only hear Democrats saying that when Republicans are in power.

But they didn't have the benefit of seeing how Christine G would carry herself as Governer. Now we do, and we are very pleased.

Who is pleased with her? People looking for actual progess in this state, or people who just want to keep the Democrats in full control? I think you know the answer.

Maybe the business leaders who are doing well....or the people who keep moving here because of all the available jobs...maybe the real estate developers who are making a killing... Wow, this is tough.

Gregorie has been a great governor for the state and it pretty hypocritical that the gop says the 2004 election was stolen but when Dems say the same thing about 2000 they say Dems should stop complaining. We have a Republican Secretary of State I doubt he would let the GOP get screwed.

rossi is a greasy slimeball. we need to get rid of all the republicans since they are all liars and criminals.

who was the last republican governor? class?

Pipe smoking Governor John Spellman, although some of us wondered about Governor Gary Locke.

The Republicans of Washington are down to their last card, Dino Rossi. Who's he running with? The Republicans are unlikely to pick up legislature seats. Tim Eyman is running a sorry initiative this year and his bread and butter depends on a low voter turnout this year. The US House against faces tough opposition to Rep. Reichert's seat with little opposition to any of the Democrat's House seats. And finally Senator John McCain running for President. The man who lost the $100 billion dollar contract for Boeing and despised by the conservative faithful.

Remember Mike! McGavick? I predict a larger margin of defeat for Dino Rossi.

I recall reading a somewhat recent PI article saying that King County Governor Gregoire had a pretty substantial lead over Dino Rossi. It's funny, the majority of people I talk to (mostly democrats) hated the way Gregroire stole the election and say that they will definitely vote for Rossi. I'm not sure who the PI polled, but then again I don't talk to dead people.

In light of a historic Democratic Party Presidential candidate and the anemic Republican support Dino's going to need a heck of a lot of Democratic support.

Maybe he should go the route of Rep. Fred Jarrett and switch the R to a D.

#110974

Posted by Hawksfan12 at 3/23/08 9:49 p.m.

I don't think Sam Reed, the Republican Secretary of State, who certifies the election results would let a Republican get screwed in the election.

Rossi is to conservative for WA, we like our Republicans sane like Sam Reed or Rob McKenna. The reason the election was so close last time was because a lot of Dems didn't vote for Gregoire. They will this time once they realize Rossi is another Bush Republican.

you can always tell how a person thinks the way they talk. If Gregoire doesn't know or gets caught in a situation where she's unsure during an interview, she uses "uh" alot. I don't trust her, just like I don't trust Clinton; they talk too much, but don't produce a thing.

I'd rather get someone in that gets something done, and not be wishy washy about it. Rossi is successful because he gets things done; all successful people work that way.

To heck with the Governess, she's just another token placed in office by the very same dumbocrats that start riots at our state educational facilities. Same idiots who protest bringing equipment back from Iraq.Same anti- americans who prevent our own US Navy from docking in our state capital harbor during our nations birthday.
No more sicko's in office! Vote for Dino!!

If you know that $75,000,000 is greater than $20,000,000 + $25,000,000 you know more than dino rossi. We don't need a fool who can't do math on a first grade level running this state.

We don't need a fool who can't do math on a first grade level running this state.

You're right, according to the dems who run things we need a few generations of people who can't add. Just look at the WASL and their rejection of standards in education.

Or are you going to argue that math is racially biased...

I think Gregoire does have room for improvement, but voting for Rossi to me is like the misguided votes for GWB saying he's 'one of us' and looking out for the average Joe. His own website says nothing but lists a bunch of topics with saying it sucks and he'll do better on it, but no inkling as to how. Now it's how hip he is on Facebook? For real? Is this some Onion joke?

Just because we didn't friend the group doesn't mean we don't support Gregoire. Nobody seriously wants Rossi or his neocons to get anywhere near the state finances ... those guys are infamous for looting companies and making no-bid contracts to their Red comrades ...

#111082

It is funny how people say Gregoire is doing a good job. The first thing she did was support a 9 cent gas tax. Supposedly it was suppose to help the Viaduct and 520. It seems like every time there is a gas tax they say 520 and the Viaduct but don't do anything.

When Locke was the Governor running for re-election he kept saying wait for the Blue Ribbon panel.

We have had the Democrats in power for almost 30 years and we are not getting anything done. The sales tax that we pay right now is more hurtful to the poor than have an income tax.

As for the Key. If we let them go then the Seattle Center will become a ghost town. And the businesses around there will disappear.

#111086

Posted by Hawksfan12 at 3/24/08 11:33 a.m.

Clay Bennett is to blame for the sonics leaving not Gregoire. Gregoire is getting stuff done there was a Seattle Times article recently that listed all her accomplishments she been a good governor.

Will of Seattle always gets it wrong. It is the people on the left who are reds not the right wing Willy me boy. You are by the way, the most red of all the posters here. Does your last name ,end with a ski or a chav? Gregoire is a pinko too!

Who's borrowing from Red China, and giving daschas to their comrades in the party, while showing how incompetent they are? Yup - the Red Bushies.

If we patriotic Americans wanted to live in Fear, we'd vote for you Reds - but we won't.

Deal with it.

The last Republican governor raised the sales tax in this state.

The Democratic Governors haven't touched it since.
