News that a Jennifer Aniston movie is filming in Pike Place Market today had some readers wondering why the rest of the film, which is set entirely in the Emerald City, is being filmed in Vancouver.

"As a crew member who lives in Seattle but has to travel for work, not only would I love to stay home and work for a change, but would love to see all of the money a film shoot generates stay in my town," reader DolphinGirl wrote after reading Kathy Mulady's story on today's shoot for the movie "Traveling."
It's happened before -- Canada stealing Seattle's film thunder with attractive incentives and cheaper costs. Mulady looked at the reasons why back in 2004, when we learned that a USA miniseries that took place in Seattle was going to be filmed entirely in Vancouver. "None of us can compete with what Canada or Romania are doing," then Seattle Film and Music Office director Donna James told Mulady. The Associated Press reported in 2005 that Washington state had lost millions in film revenue to Canada.
Today, staff at the film office are optimistic, saying things are looking up for Seattle thanks in part to a weaker Canadian dollar and recent Washington state film incentive programs.
"Our office has seen the number of permits we issue each year steadily increasing," said Karin Zaugg Black. The office issued 174 film permits in 2005, 228 permits in 2006 and 319 in 2007, she said. These include not only a handful of feature films but also what Zaugg Black calls the "steady bread and butter" of local filming -- car commercials, corporate videos, the kind of stuff Jennifer Aniston doesn't star in and we don't write articles about.
She acknowledged our neighbors to the north aren't making things easy.
"It certainly is competitive, and film productions in recent years have a history of going to Vancouver," Zaugg Black said. "I think we all continue to work and make (Seattle) more attractive, and I think we're trending upward."
The "Traveling" crew is filming key Seattle backdrops this week, bringing in an expected $1.4 million to the local economy.
But as many readers pointed out, if the crew stayed the whole shoot, that number could have been a lot bigger.
"It's unfortunate," w2 wrote in response to DolphinGirl. "But that's the way it is."

I guess the Kapow people are just like the Sonics. Moving away because of ownership and the fans lose out."

Given the cost of the Euro and the Canadian dollar, it does seem a bit odd ...
