Eliot Ness to Eliot Mess: Spitzer asked to step down

Say it ain't so, Eliot! Governor, you're breaking our hearts.

Picture
New York Post

He was once known as the Sheriff of Wall Street, an investigator unafraid of attacking even the most powerful of corrupt institutions and people. He joined Microsoft in taking on spammers, and started criticizing mortgage-lending practices long before the market's recent problems. I mean, if there was a guy to stand behind, it was he.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a hero to consumer crusaders across the nation, is today the laughing stock for standup comics and barroom hecklers from Flatbush Avenue to Glenoaks Boulevard.

Spitzer is now known as "Client 9," as he is implicated in a prostitution ring linking high-end call girls to wealthy johns.

The Associated Press:

Client 9 wanted a high-priced prostitute named Kristen to come to Washington on a 5:39 p.m. train from Manhattan Feb. 13. The door to the hotel room would be left ajar. Train tickets, cab fare, room service, and the minibar were all on him.

"Yup, same as in the past. No question about it," the caller told Kristen's boss, when asked if he would make his payment to the same business as usual, a federal affidavit said. The client paid $4,300 to Kristen, touted by the escort service as a "petite, pretty brunette," according to the court papers.

The Feb. 13 tryst took place in the Mayflower hotel, where Spitzer rented a second room for the woman under another name, the law enforcement official who spoke to The AP on Tuesday said. Spitzer had to sneak past his State Police detail to get to her room, the official said.

According to the court papers, an Emperors Club agent was told by the prostitute that her evening with Client 9 went well. The agent said she had been told that the client "would ask you to do things that ... you might not think were safe ... very basic things," according to the papers, but Kristen responded by saying: "I have a way of dealing with that ... I'd be, like, listen dude, you really want the sex?"

New York Daily News

And now, the formerly feared New York Attorney General is being asked to step down as governor by three of the largest populist New York newspapers, the New York Post, New York Daily News and Newsday (of Long Island). The GOP is also seeking the governor's impeachment.

The press has been all over every aspect of this story. There's even a wire story with the headline, "Clinton declines comment on Spitzer." Even fairweather news readers of short-term memory might think that was satirically referencing Bill. But, no, they mean Hillary.

Odd that you failed to mention his party affiliation. Do I sense bias here, or was it an honest mistake? I'm sure if it was a member of the GOP it would have been the first 3 letters of the headline title.

journalism is dead!!

Bummer, for him and his family.

I don't think I'd go as far as expecting him to resign, but it would seem prudent for him to make amends for going after so many people who were only doing what he himself did.

There's a word for "consumer crusaders!" It's called communist's. Oh, did I say that? Sorry. How about Marxist? That word doesn't conger up the thought of millions dying and of gulags. Nonetheless, they all want the same thing. Putting the resources of the state off limits to the public. That my friend is communism. "Consumer-Crusaders!" LOLOLOL

Oh, by the way, what party affiliation is Spitzer? Nobody in the news mentions his party. Is he a republican?

Great crusader this guy is. He was prosecuting johns
while he was one himself. Sounds more like a Democrat than a crusader. I wonder what party he belongs to? I'll have to go look it up.

(Shouting from the mountaintop because the feckless press can't do its job) Eliot Spitzer is a Democrat! (/Shouting)

That is amusing, although it's few enough data points to suggest an outright conspiracy. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the R's are traditionally more about spending tons of borrowed money to outlaw bedroom behavior?

dpk--I bet you think yourself a good person. Beware of he who think himself good, for that goodness is manifest of carnal desire, often the embodiment of evil;
as a result truly a bad person is he.

An educated closed minded person is more dangerous than an axe wielding psychopath.
For the axe wielding psychopath responds to reason, the educated is closed minded.

enough with the charges of media bias for every liberal news source there is a conservative one. It very hypocritical for Republicans to call on Spitzer to resign as they ahve just as many sex scandals.

And hey, why should he resign? Democrats don't care about morals, or women. Heck they have a senator who killed a woman and he's still around. They have a KKK member in the senate. Treating people like dirt is a badge of honor for Democrats. Plus, his wife can run for senate now.

Wonder if Hilary Diane Clinton or Barack Hussein Obama will be the first to offer him the vice-presidency? What a way to enhance your resume, bet other 'rat governors are kicking themselves today.

I'm being serious when I ask - what has he done that should be cause for him to resign? Is it just that he's hired a prostitute or is there more?

and republican have more morals? please it just as bad for them or not worst. and byrd was in the KKK as a youth back in the 1930s. He realized it was a very bad idea and denounced his past. He not still an active member.

Boy it sure is funny. When the, I believe mayor of Spokane was caught is a sex mess, the lefties were crying "Get him Out". Now the Mayor of New York is caught, the lefties say it is O.k. That it is a personal matter. What a bunch of hypocrites.

As a youth? He was a Grand Kleagle or whatever they're called. He recruited members. BUT! He's a Democrat, so that's all okay. Same with the guy who left the expectant mother for dead. Now the current jerk used the name of a donor when he committed his crimes... crimes he sent other to jail for. I cannot believe (yes, I can) people are so devoted to one man that they will defend him at all costs
just for partisan reasons. It's why the press won't mention his party. Same reason. Just like Clinton. Just let him hang around and not let his Democrat successor take over, and then you'll have a Republican win his office next term. Fine by me.

I subscribe to Allen Dershowitz (sp) view; we need to get out of other people's bedrooms and bathrooms.

It is a waste of time and money for America to continue with a puritanical double life/culture.

This call-girl was making $5,000 for a night's work; she was not being abused or taken advantage of in any way.

Men, and women, of all ages and social strata have sex outside of marriage; it should be none of our business.

*******************

I find this doubly arcane given that this started with an IRS investigation. How on God's green earth can we justify the IRS leading others in to our bedrooms.

Okay, you're all right. Governors get to break the law.
What was I thinking? Only little people have to obey the laws the governors like Spitzer throw people in jail for.

Unreal.

Hey bigcon:

where was the outcry from the GOP when vitter was caught with a hooker? that's what i though.

Its not just like Clinton he was with a hooker he broke the law, Clinton, while being immoral did not break the law. And the only reason Bush won was because Nader took 97000 votes in FL. If no Nader Gore wins by a large margin in fL and wins the election

We in Europe smile at the histerical way you guys are making this out to be the end of the world, yes he did wrong in that he was in public office of trust and being a big hippocrate Spitzer got what he deserved. Hey ! my previous comment about Spitzer saying "Wake up America no one died" seems to have woken some of u guys up..Good theres more

From a Euopean stand point this is how politcis seems to works US style

You have a vice president Dick head Cheney (thats right Dick Head) with a heart condition now high on medication shouting "Lets Invade errh! Iraq" and a cluless president Bush says " Oh! Ok where is it" make up some mad excuse about WMD hence the mess that you've got the world into.

I accept that most reading this share my view and didn't support this mad adventure but for those that do and did, shame on you!!
