« Why we didn't run the McCain story | Main | Sir Mix-A-Lot to speak at UW dinner Tuesday »

Two papers. Two photographers. Infinite possibilities.
Almost the exact same picture.
"Of all the places we could have photographed during those many hours, we happened to photograph the exact same thing," said P-I photographer Josh Trujillo, who snapped a photo of an airplane passing in front of the darkened moon that was featured on the front page of the P-I's local section today.
The photo featured on the front of the Seattle Times' local section -- taken by photographer Jim Bates -- was taken at almost the same place, at almost the same moment.
It's the kind of coincidence that even in a competitive environment can make newsroom staff smile.
Trujillo said he spoke to Bates before the photos were taken and learned that both he and the Times photographer -- who did not collaborate with each other -- took their pictures from points along Alki Beach.
Many photographers had gathered at Alki to try to capture the reddish moon and the Seattle skyline in the same picture. The moon never dipped low enough for that, Trujillo said.
The caption on the Times' photo recorded the time as 6:35 p.m. The timestamp on Trujillo's photo read 6:33:41 p.m. The Times headlined its photo, "In Earth's shadow." The P-I called it, "First-class view."
Wednesday's event -- a total lunar eclipse -- will not be repeated until Dec. 20, 2010. There will be a total solar eclipse and a partial lunar eclipse in August.
Photographic coincidences have rolled off the local presses before, but usually in the sports section, Trujillo said. For one to result from a long-lasting celestial event that can be photographed from almost any point in the city is much more unusual.

I thought Joshua's photo was awesome when I first saw it on the PI - it's pretty cool both photographers caught the same neat image.
