Obama faintings: coincidence? A P-I photographer weighs in

Picture
Presidential candidate Barack Obama tosses his bottled water to a supporter who apparently fainted during a rally on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at KeyArena in Seattle. The senator appeared before a rowdy crowd of thousands of Washingtonians downtown. (Photo/Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Joshua Trujillo)

As any of the 21,000 people who packed his rally in KeyArena could tell you, Sen. Barack Obama gets big crowds -- and gets them excited.

Now a blog post this week by a conservative radio talk show host asking whether faintings at five Obama rallies are coincidence or sly campaign trickery is riling up the political blogosphere. The Wall Street Journal linked to James Vicevich's blog in its Thursday Best of the Web roundup. And today, Seattle radio host Dori Monson brought the issue home on the air and in a blog post:

Is it phoney, orchestrated campaign theatrics or is it merely physiological coincidence? You be the judge.

P-I photographer Josh Trujillo was at the rally and captured a moment when the senator, part way through his speech, tossed a water bottle at a woman who was fainting near the platform (see the photo gallery). Trujillo also photographed Sen. Hillary Clinton's Seattle visit the previous day, where he saw two women faint and leave on stretchers. At long, crowded events like this year's political rallies, he said, it's bound to happen.

"There are always people that faint. Guaranteed," Trujillo said. "When somebody has to stand at one spot, at a view up front of their candidate, and they wait hours upon hours with no water, no food, it's expected and understandable."

A full house of 5,000 people made it hot and stuffy at the Pier 30 warehouse where Sen. Clinton spoke Feb. 7. He saw two adult women on the floor from his bird's-eye-view spot on a raised platform. One fainted before Clinton spoke and another lay down around the the time Clinton took the stage, but was most likely too far from the candidate for her to notice, Trujillo said. His view of the woman at the Obama rally was obstructed by the crowd.

Doors opened to supporters at the Obama event just after 10 a.m. The senator began his 50-minute speech after 1 p.m. Trujillo arrived at 9:30 a.m..

"We have to get there hours in advance. If we're not smart enough to take food and water, then by the time the candidate comes out, we're feeling a little faint," he said. He took a water bottle to each rally.

It's Dori Monson on KIRO fwiw. Everyone is so cynical and questioning, including dumb stuff like this fainting thing. I've personally seen a number of people pass out in different circumstances over the years and long before Obama. Then this upcoming action by the Govt. to shoot down a straying satellite is immediately met with suspicion, it's all a plot. I would think it perfect justice if they decided not to do anything and the largest, most dangerous pieces flattened some of the conspiracy theorists. Btw, I'm all for the Govt. using this as a training run as well for their missiles it might come in handy in the future for a number of good sound reasons you knuckleheads.

Dori thinks he's really breaking some news here. His tabloid journalism is a little off. Another right wing radio host "broke this story" last Tuesday.

Is this what the right is stooping to in order to find fault with Obama? I personally find his speaches to be inspiring. Yes, I get a thrill hearing him. When I think of Barack Obama, the words NEW, HOPE, and FUTURE come to mind. When I think of Mrs. Clinton, I think of words like PROBLEMS, TRADITIONAL, BAGGAGE. McCain: WAR, FEAR, TERROR. Huckabee:, Well I just don't think about him...

Want to talk about phoniness at campaign events?

How about Clinton's fake questioners who are pre-coached on what to ask so Clinton can start reading from her index cards "Well, Helen, it's good that you ask, because...." and rattle off canned answers.

Phony candidate all the way, that Clinton (both of them, really).

#99038

Posted by Able at 2/15/08 8:27 p.m.

I have never seen a finer job of acting than that of Barack Obama on those videos posted on Dori Monson's website. And the left thought Ronald Reagan was an actor?! The real acting will come from all the Obama supporters explaining this away as nothing because they are held in delusion by a man with a lot of charisma, but, just like Hillary says, without a lot of substance to his ideas and platform.

#99059

Posted by cloudyday at 2/15/08 9:41 p.m.

Clinton fake questioner(s) at a news conference btw, and what does that have to do with Obama specifically? Then accusations of acting by Obama with the water bottle thing. You know how many rallies he's appeared at, with the same general speech and rhetoric only slightly changed for each city to throw in a Hello Seattle! and It's good to in the NW! etc? He's had plenty of practice in playing to an audience much like stage actors or rocks stars do.

And the number of times people have fainted/passed out at his and other candidate's events has more to do with the heat of a packed room, excitement levels, the extremely long waits audience members endure and probably not wanting to leave their front row positions crammed in there to use the john or get food/drink for fear of losing their spot near the front. So if Barack seems well-practiced in tossing a water bottle into the crowd along with some banter it's because he's done it before just a few times.

Plus what's to gain for him playing to the choir at a glorified Obama pep rally where 95% of the people are clearly supporting him anyway? I wager there's hardly any fence-sitters at ANY of the candidates rallies in fact. Why would a McCain supporter for example attend an Obama rally!

#99065

Posted by cloudyday at 2/15/08 9:54 p.m.

Yeah that Clinton "news conference" - it wasn't even an actual news conference with her flunkies intermingled with real reporters. No, the entire thing was an orchestrated sham. I don't think it's fair at all to associate Obama with that idiotic and phony ploy by the Clinton campaign. The worst thing his campaign has seemingly done is not have enough water bottles for audiences and giving out the wrong day for the WA State caucus at first- and he still kicked her butt in every county.

ILOL

he's the sleaziest right wing hack in Seattle! You can take what he knows and put it on the head of a pin! I can listen to him for 5 minutes every couple of weeks to know that he hasn't gotten any smarter.

He is continually stumped for meaningful conversation and one of the dimmer bulbs in local radio. His name is also 'Monson' not 'Munson.' If his daily show isn't enough, he also ruins football dialog with the rest of the KIRO radio 'crew'.

Anyone whose stood on a parade ground knows why these people faint. When you stand for long periods with knees locked, your blood pressure drops. The simple remedy is to slightly flex your knees and there's no fainting. I've seen completely healthy men, with plenty of rest, food and hydration topple like rotten trees when they forgot to keep their knees flexible. Over a one hour program, I once saw over 20 faint and hit the tarmac face first, while everyone around them continued to stand at attention.
No story here.

Anyone who's been to a few large concerts has seen people faint. And good grief, they used to drop like flies at Billy Graham crusades. Was that phony, too, wingnuts?

No one, other than Jim Jones---founder of the People's Temple, has captivated crowds like Obama.

This has nothing to do with the "Kool-Aid" party Jones foisted on his people. Watch footage of his sermons at the People's Temple, while in San Francisco. Same crying, passing out, etc.

cloudyday,

expand your mind....

perhaps, just perhaps, I bring up Clinton's fake questioner/planted questions because the same people who support Clinton are accusing Obama of having fake fainters?

Just perhaps. I know, that's such a stretch that I might be suggesting the same Clinton supporters who tolerate her fake questions fiasco are now crying foul on Obama when people faint at his gatherings, and that the Clinton people are the ones with a PROVEN history of FAKING THINGS AT RALLIES.

so cloudyday, If you still don't see why someone might want to mention Clinton's proven faking history, in an article where Obama is accused by Clinton supporters of faking things, and you don't see the irony of that accusation and where the accusation came from, the day is not the only thing that's cloudy, your mind just might be a touch overcast too.

what substance, if any, is there to anything Hillary says she'll do, if she cannot be trusted?

Let's see.....Career Washington Insider wants to convince us she's THE Agent of Change, Great Saviour v.2.0 for our Health Care System, senator from New York who calculatingly moved there 6 months before filing candidacy papers to represent people, ANY people, as long as she'll get elected....I'd rather buy swamp land in FLA than to believe her promises.

This is an interesting discussion but don't diss Dori. He is just a messenger. In fact we would have a much healthier city and region if folks listened to other viewpoints. As for the fainting fans being front and center on the candidate, they were probably the first ones there and are usually pressed up against some type of crowd control barrier. Its pretty common. Its not some supernatural thing. Nor is it likely trickery. As for the candidate being a bit opportunistic - much more likely.

The fact is that Sen Obama, our next President, actually pays attention - and cares.

Something you just can't believe in, because you hate our core American values.

Americans care for Americans - we care that we have health care, we care if they have water, we care if their jobs are shipped overseas so the CEO gets an extra $500 million bonus this year.

Fainted because it's a muggy room? Or fainted because they want a piece of the action. Hearing about these people fainting at rallys makes me think of that one guy that makes you call up this 1-800 number and pay him money so you can see him b-slap somebody on screen. Obama didn't hit that person w/ the water bottle? Cuz He'd be an awesome president in my book. His new moto would be "Giving Americans a healthy reality check"...what next?...A college girl throwing her $90 Victoria Secret underwear onstage? Oh classic.

#99281

I don't want to take the time to register as it took forever to read through all the bashings and whining and pointing fingers. Anyone who has ever been in a formation standing at attention for over 10 minutes on a parade field knows its a guarantee that someone is going to faint...just a matter of when. The only thing that comes into question is whether he's actually the caring citizen he appears to be by making sure the people get taken care of.....or....is it a 'scheme' like all other politicians have.

Personally, I value a person who can stand up to criticism and get stronger for it. Obama has my support not because of what Clinton does or does not do...or because of what any of the other candidates do or do not do...but because of what Obama does himself. He's a very intelligent speaker and you can see that he actually takes a moment to think about questions so he can give a descent answer. We need a strong leader as well as one who applies Common Sense!!! I could mention so many things about other candidates and how they are so wrong about such and such and so and so.....but that won't do any good...it's only my opinion.

There are considerably more serious things to worry about than fainting....think of an Elvis concert...hehehe. Someone who can think for him/herself and is not afraid of the kinder, gentler, let me just sue you, self-serving society that we have right now. Change is coming---and I'd rather someone who was proactive rather than reactive...and who will think before speaking because with all this on a 'fainting ploy' what in the world will be said next.

Let's not get complacent though. The GOP always has an ace in the hole. They've promised corporations $trillions in ill-gotten gains in exchange for campaign contributions and other nefarious help. Close to a majority of people in this country are dumbasses who vote for whoever the Republican candidate is on their ballot, so they need not attend rallies. The GOP strategy has worked like a charm the last 7 years, and it can succeed again.

I wonder if these righ wing bloggers ever went to a rock concert with open seating up to the stage. At the risk of dating myself, I remember seeing Green Day and Soundgarden at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. In both cases the floor was packed and people would feint halfway through.

Not as much moshing at Key Arena that day but there were people that spend hours in line then spend a couple more hours on the floor waiting for Obama to arrive. Not a real stretch to assume that someone in the crowd didn't hydrate properly.

I think what is tripping the bloggers up is that they don't know how to process a politican doing something human that isn't scripted. They don't trust nice, they assume being good to people is some sort of cover. Sleazy on the other hand, they get. It is familiar ground that they trust.

Not phony or staged but very interesting. Faintings like this go all the way back to frontier evangelism. It is the measure of excitement & enthusiasm generated in the crowd & it seems to show an exceptionally deep involvement in a political campaign. Implication: a populace ready for revolution, upheaval cleaning out the bungling Bush plutocracy & the president's wicked war.

Ah, the right-wingers are starting up again. Can't really find substantive ways to criticize Obama's message, so they stoop to calling his supporters "fakers". Once again, lameness rules the GOP and their rabid sycophants.

There are probably those who've fainted at McCain rallies, too. But then, it's probably just a result of advanced age - or forgetting their medication.

I used to pass out at church (which was great, because it meant we got to leave mass early) reportedly because I 'locked' my knees. I also fainted outside the Coliseum, waiting in a crowded line for an AC/DC concert one warm afternoon. So I'm not the least bit surprised people pass out in any crowd, and/or where they're standing still for a long period of time.

OMG, Dori is so DEFINITELY not a liberal! He probably spewed Diet Coke through his nose when he read that. And while I don't agree with him politically, I'm not going to bash him, and I really do enjoy listening to him during the pre-and post-Seahawks game broadcasts.

#99413

I almost fainted reading these comments.

Though I do not always agree with Dori Monson, he knows a good topic when he sees one and radio shows are not known for being based on in-depth reporting. Ask Rush. You know he will tell you the true story.

Fact people faint when grouped together in overcrowded settings. Some pass out but in the absense of any containers we can assume they needed more liquid not less. Would a presedential contender buried up to their eye balls in news media stage a fainting? I seriously doubt it. We have all seen Elmer Gantry at one time or another.

Now would a "jump at any opportunity" contender make an issue of one if he saw it out of the corner of his eye? Absolutely! Anyone ever stop and think he sees these women in distress in the center section because that's where the teleprompter and cameras are.

Is it right? In this hotly contested race, right went out the window a long time ago, and as it has been said many times over, "You ain't seen nothing yet!"

The rights problem is they have spent all of our poltical awareness attacking all things liberal and Clinton, So much so they now find themselves out of ammunition. They are now down to accusing the oppositions front runner of the same dirty tricks the evangelists they all adore have been using for years.

How low will they go? Stay tuned America.

Dave Ross is the only reason I would come back to Kiro.
I wish he would move to KPTK 1090.
I have been really happy with Thom Hartmann 9-noon and Ed Schultz noon to 3.
Thom is very smart...just like Dave Ross.
Dori showed his colors when he constantly picked on Allan Prell...
talk about a huge whiner,
'Allan is so messy', 'allan leaves his crumbs here'...
telling the whole world like that...???
like his own poop was rose scented
To be honest...I think Dori is many times a nice person, a great dad, a great friend but too many times a big poo poo.

I am not saying I could do any better or anything, I am just saying it is depressing to hear the negativity all the time.
It would ruin my day

Just because yousay it over and over...does mean it's true...
That is manipulation...just like we get from shows that even bring up stupid stuff like this...
when someone comes forward to say 'they can prove that it is a fake'
then why don't you get on your high horse about it.
You probably think that 9/11 was all Saddam's fault!
You should be a fact checker...not a gullible little nay sayer!

#99503

observerz logic?

"This issue either speaks to a set up"

A set up? Oh...so someone has hired folks to faint?
Was there a want ad in the paper for 'fainters'?
What are the odds that one person, ONE person would stand up to that kind of theatre and say NO and tell the world that they were asked to faint? This means that you believe in the creepiness of people to do such things.Did they hire folks to do it at Hillary's rally? Were the fainters at the Beatle's concerts fakes as well??

," or it speaks to incompetence. For those not viewing obama as the 2nd coming of Christ, this situation is troubling."
So...he should make sure that everyone who comes in to the stadiums get a good nights sleep the night before?
Not allow older people who are subject to fainting? Have blood pressure checks at every entrance. Check all doctors records of each attendee just in case?

YOu folks are truly fishing. The real issue is 'what is your problem?'
How have you learned to type on a keyboard and yet not learned to think critically?

You just have to laugh at morons like "Will in Seattle" and "oldemarine" who rail at "neocons" like the term actually meant something. It was meant to depict those who newly chose conservatism after presumably being liberal. But now the left likes to use it as a catch all phrase,,,,morons!! Thats a nice catch all phrase for liberals. In case you doubted, I am conservative, always have been and couldnt give a rip less about Obama. I hope you do make him your candidate. When he is forced to actually say something, or take a stand. people are gonna be on him like stink on a democratic. He has no position except ,,"we can do it,,,the audacity of hope,,,yada yada yada" When he says what he really means he will go down so fast it will make your little liberal head spin(faster then they already do).

Yep, Same place in crowd, same lines......me thinks the far left wouldn't know a con job if it bit them in the arse...........Very selective thinking as usual in this part of the world, The Peoples Republic of WA.........

Keep counting and tallying up all the documented fainting spells--especially at the Ron Paul pow-wows and the Mike Huckabee sermons."

Accept what appears to be fainting at a Huckabee sermon is actually people sleeping

Dori Dori Dori...
today he didn't even play the full quote of Michelle Obama!!!

She said this...
"For the first time in my adult lifetime I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."

He played this
"For the first time in my adult lifetime I am proud of my country.
He even managed to squeak out the 'really'

If you read it for content you will see she said this:
"For the first time in my adult lifetime I am really proud of my country, but because I think people are hungry for change."

What other time in her lifetime have people been so hungry for change.

Dori is a manipulator.
Facts is facts!

Dori just doesn't get how he messes with people's minds. All for entertainment...nothing to do with integrity.
That hurts a lot of people. It's a cheaters way to go through life.
Manipulation of the truth.
Sick!

Oh please, so people are fainting at Obama rallies? So? Did anyone ever think that maybe some of this is contributed to the room being filled to capacity and it can get hot or uncomfortable with so many people filling a contained space?

And funny but I saw someone faint at one of Hillary's rallies and she interrupted her speech to tell someone to get that person a glass of water.

What are we picking on now? That people faint at Obama's rallies? SO? Good grief, nitpicking is alive and well in the good old U.S. of A.
