New York sex columnist loses job after plagiarizing Seattle's Dan Savage

Update, Jan. 25 -- Savage has said he feels bad for the columnist and doesn't think her gaffe amounts to plagiarism. See our latest post for more.

Update, 5:15 p.m. -- Savage has posted on Slog, The Stranger's blog, that about 8 million people have sent him links to posts about this, including the Big Blog's. "At the moment I have no comment," he wrote. "Carry on."

A new New York Press sex-advice columnist has resigned after it was revealed that she lifted material for her inaugural column from Seattle's own Dan Savage of The Stranger.

From a letter by New York Press editor-in-chief David Blum, posted on its site:

Picture

It has come to our attention that some of the questions in this week's debut of the New York Press's new sex-advice column, "Lip Service," were taken from past columns by Dan Savage, the nationally-syndicated sex-advice columnist and editor of The Stranger. The author of the column, Claudia Lonow, a television writer based in Los Angeles who had not previously written for a newspaper, used the questions to provide material for her inaugural column, in the absence of real questions from readers. It had been our understanding that the questions for her first column came from friends. She has told us she was unaware that using questions from Savage's column was a breach of journalism ethics. She has offered her resignation, and we've accepted it. We apologize to our readers, and to Dan Savage, for this error in judgment.

I've e-mailed Dan Savage to see what he has to say about this. We'll update if we hear back.

P.S. -- For more, here's a post from Jezebel, the New York blog that apparently did Lonow in. And for local reaction, here's Seattlest's take.

I only read Dan Savage's sex column once (after following a link of 'staff favorites' from the PI's website). It was answering the burning question that I'm sure is on most Seattlite's minds, "How much of my partner's urine can I safely drink."

That was enough for me. No thank you, Mr. Savage. New York ... you're not missing anything.

Well, at least you didn't make a snap decision about his columns.

First, Dan Savage is great, and his column is a hoot and at least it isn't tripe you often read, including the garbage from most NY writers.

Second, she didn't know that taking someone else's work and calling it hers was wrong? I guess in TV there isn't a unique thought anywhere to be found. Maybe that goes for LA too. And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800 - 1859) then, to quote a famous New Yorker, "The only "ism" Hollywood believes in is plagiarism.
Dorothy Parker (1893 - 1967)."

Why am I reminded of the old "Mickey Mouse Show" when they sang theme "M-I-C-K-E-Y, M-O-U-S-E, Mickey Mouse!" and Donald Duck used to chime in with "Donald Duck!"

Woo hoo! Aren't we special! A New York writer ripped off Seattle's Dan Savage's column!

Obviously they don't teach them about plagarism in TV writing school. For "I didn't know it was wrong", read "I thought I could get away with it." She didn't even have the imagination to make up questions to answer for her first column. I dare say she would have been dropped shortly even if she hadn't blown it on her first go. Making stuff up to fill the space is what columnists do!

My guess #1 unregistered user is that you're a bit on the prudish side, Dan Savage is great. You don't have to "take-up" the practices or follow the advice in his column to enjoy the writing.
One of the funniest things I've ever read was a letter sent to him in which some unfortunate soul had met a girl he really liked, spent the night, and in the morning when she got up to shower, he thought it a golden opportunity to relieve a little pressure that had built up over-night. Unfortunately (for all involved) it apparently wasn't just air pressure and the poor lad soiled the girls sheets. He panicked, and left while she was still in the shower. His question regarded how to mend fences in light of his hasty exit in a weak moment. Mr. Savage's advice was more or less... "good luck with that, you crapped someones sheets and then left." And if you've read (or heard on NPR) any of his essays on raising his adopted son with his partner, you'll laugh and cry and relate in a way that maybe only a parent can. From where I sit, Dan Savage is a treasure, and at least this so called columnist had the good taste to plagiarize his work rather than some droll hack.

Dan Savage is responsible for coining and promoting the intentionally repulsive word "santorum" to mean "the frothy mixture of fecal matter and lube which is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex". (Google it.)

This was in response to the jackass-edness of former Senator Rick Santorum, who compared homosexuality to bestiality.

And for this reason, among many others, DAN SAVAGE ROCKS.

I've been reading Dan Savage's column religiously since the early 90's, and have no intention of stopping any time soon. May he stay in Seattle and keep writing/advising for a long time to come! He's proven himself quite influential, besides, especially in reference to the "Santorum" episode as mentioned above (LMAO)...

Mr. Savage, can you tell me how I can convince my future wife to have anal sex, and general sex 3 times per day?

Thank you,
macker

macker, "general sex" is a great game: I'll be the four-star general and you can bring along the privates and order them to attention.

this is both sad and funny. sad because someone is dumb enough to plagarize (didn't she learn anything in high school?) and funny because savage has basically been repeating himself in his column for about ten years now (you might even call it self-plagarization!) and his material isn't worth reading much less swiping. but i'm sure savage will use the opportunity, as he always does, to declare himself god and the p-i will help in its usual capacity as savage's mainstream media publicist. nice to see that guzman has taken over for paynter in this capacity.

DAN SAVAGE IS A PATHETIC HUMAN BEING HEADING FOR THE LAKE OF FIRE. TO PLAGERIZE HIM IS LIKE PLAGERIZING THE NEWSPAPER AT THE BOTTOM OF BIRDCAGES. THE GUY IS SOOOO
LAME...

I agree with Senator Rick Santorum 100%. I don't think he went quite far enough though.
We need a man like Rick Santorum in the White House. He would be a great starting point to clean up the mess America has DEGENERATED into.
RICK SANTORUM FOR PRESIDENT.
That has such a beautful ring to it.

Yes, the USA is degenerating into equality under the law for all people and the right to privacy for actions that do not threaten or harm anyone. (Oh, that was in the Constitution already, wasn't it?)

I guess 90271 wants to station a cop in every bedroom to make sure no one engages in one of the "forbidden" activities, that is, anything but the missionary position between husband and wife, without touching or looking at any other body part. Or, is it that Dan Savage has the freedom to talk about such things that gives Santorum's supporters' willies the willies?

I really doubt 90271 wants to deploy government bedroom police. You people are either parnoid, or are missing the point.

Most of us don't care to write or advertise what goes into or out of our butts or other orafices - and don't deny Mr. Savages' or others' consitutional right to do so.

What has changed in our society is (a) the exposure foisted on the general public by publications, such as the Stranger being distributed at every latte stand and coffe shop around the city [and some of their articles are quite good - but some of the content is repulsive - intentionally so] and (b) the immediate access to such content from sites such as this one, which either promote it - as in this article, or link to it (see PI staff favorites such as "mansplat" and follow the links).

I'm not a prude at all. I think it's wonderful that some people in this city find fulfillment drinking each other's urine or whatever they do in private. I just don't particularly care to read about it when I pick up a "free paper" at Starbucks or browse blogs such as this one.

I think Seattle's standards of what is appropriate have fallen terribly. I would not let my middle school child research ANY news item on the PI's web site for fear of where they might end up. The Times would be just fine. Not that I think they'd be damaged by it - I just don't care for them to be exposed at this age. When they're in High School and hanging out at Starbucks and pick up a copy of The Stranger and turn through to the back pages - they'll be exposed enough - and I'm sure that makes Mr. Savage and his like-minded supporters very, very happy indeed.

90433,
I was responding to a post that wanted the President of the US (Rick Santorum in their view) to somehow interject government into free speech and journalism and somehow "clean up the mess". If you don't like Savage's columns, write to the editor, don't read them or do whatever you think is proper, but please let's not have government, especially the President, spend time trying to censor Savage.

I am happy that you supervise what your middle school child reads. I think that is the appropriate response to a parent's concern about "corruption" by articles (or movies, web sites, or any other media) that contains adult content. I personally would select several of Savage's articles that I have read to discuss with my adolescent child, because I would want him or her to have correct information and not get it from the school yard, or by trial and error. I would also make sure my adolescent knew that I was available to discuss anything in the Stranger or any other publication they came upon.

I'm not even so offended by the fact she plagiarized. I'm offended by the fact that she is too stupid (or so claims)to even know what plagiarism is. It's like the people I knew in college who acted so surprised when the professor discovered that their essays were lifted straight from Wikipedia.

And for the guy offended over the content of Savage Love and the Stranger: Whether you like it or not, your teenage children and their friends will probably be getting a lot of useful advice from Dan Savage's column (and others like it)over the next few years. Having such a prudish parent will only make your them more eager to discover what all the fuss is about.

90544 and others seem to confuse prudishness with civility. There is a difference - which you fail to grasp. Prudishness takes offense, whereas the latter takes no offense but simply prefers it was not so waved about in our faces.
