State lawmaker caught with pants down in Spokane scandal

Allegations of cross-dressing sex involving a state Republican lawmaker from one of the most conservative districts in Washington, a police report about an extortion attempt for sexual favors rendered in a swanky hotel romp with gay porn videos.

It doesn't get any stranger than this – and all in Spokane, home to the Jim West sex scandal of only a year or so in the past.

What is it about a conservative lawmaker declaring, "I'm not gay" to signal that there must be much more to the story?

Regardless of whether criminal charges are filed our not, state Rep. Richard Curtis, R-La Center, has clearly been caught with his pants down – revealing a tale where witnesses told police he was seen cross-dressing in red pantyhose and a black sequined lingerie top, having sex with a man in an adult porn shop, and finally picking up a 26-year-old Medical Lake man and allegedly agreeing to pay him $1,000 for sex.

Only when Curtis lost, or gave, or had his wallet taken in the incident, did the sordid tale start to unravel for Spokane police and ultimately the media across the state. The story led two Seattle TV newscasts Tuesday night and was carried nationwide by The Associated Press.

Curtis, who is married and has a record of voting against bills to grant civil rights protections to gays and lesbians, apparently is well known in the Spokane area, even though he lives in the far southwest corner of the state, over 300 miles away.

Spokane police, according to the AP story, interviewed Jalene Henneman, a Hollywood Exotic Boutique employee, who told them Curtis had been in the store three separate times in the past month, and called him "the cross dresser." Henneman said Curtis told her his wife knew he was gay, but that he only pursued sex with men when he was out of town, according to the report.

Now, he apparently has outed himself in a public spectacle that truly sheds new light on the word hypocrisy

That's hot. Hypocritical closeted Republican legislators turn me on. There are so many! I'm bound to score! Forget truck stops and the downtown 24 hour fitness. The new pick-up spot of choice is your local district Republican party meeting!

Hey maybe Curtis should be introduced to Larry Craig.

Outstanding! Further evidence that the GOP is dominated by closeted, self-loathing queers. Add a few neocon, Jewish benefactors who'd gladly inflict their own holocaust on every Islamic person still breathing, then throw in a few evangelical hold-outs, and you have today's Republican party. The country clubbers, of course, have already fled. The only variable saving the GOP from Whig-like oblivion, ironically enough, is the chronically inept Democratic party.

Where's the hypocrisy? The man clearly knows that his predilictions are deviant - and he wants to keep them secret - and he doesn't support granting rights to people based on their sex acts. Sounds consistent to me.

Whulj I would have said in the past you were a lill over the top. Since we learned of the Toe Tapper of Idaho and other revelations of the past few years it is apparent you may have captured the essence of large segments apparently of self loathing homopathy in the Republican party.

I am utterly dismayed at how the local media seems to be allowing supporters of the Republican State Legislator, but leaving Cody out there like he is some bad guy. I knew Cody, and he isn't the type of person to extort someone for money for sex. This is clearly another issue of a closeted Republican law-maker regretting what he had done. I would like to see more support for Cody in the broadcasts on the local news stations, as it seems that the State Representative already has gotten the news stations to give him support.

Hey - azpsbxy75: There's a word for what Cody did: "Prostitution." It happens to be illegal in this state.

One could say Cody got a bum rap - getting stiffed by the legislator like that. (Not being paid, I mean.)

Yes, we should feel sorry for him.

Oh my. Seattle area politicisns' scandals are just so pedestrian. All the alcohol-fueled hijinks just do not hold a candle to red women's stockings, a black spangly top, bookstore sex, and allegations of extortion.

Does Rep Curtis have to go all the way to Spokane to avoid all his sober suit-wearing gay colleagues in Seattle??

Good for Rep. Curtis for getting a room, at least once. Good for him for choosing adult partners.

So the guy has a wife and kids? So what? Lots of gay men get wives and kids before they realize other things about their sexuality. And in many situations lots fo things survive about these family relationships regardless of other realities.

So what if the guy votes against gay rights legislation? He could be a. doing what he thinks his constituents want. b. not identifying as someone who needs protections because he has a system worked out that seems to meet his needs. c. Who knows?

Larry Craig's constituents seems to like what he does for them in the Senate and apparently not to care about his personal life. It would not be the worst thing to find ot that is true for Rep Curtis too, but it's really sad when people like to breathe fire about "family issues"cannot back off and let real families work out what seem like more complicated problems than average.

Yes, technically it is prostitution, however the State Representative is just as guilty. I think that the same steps that were being taken by the Congress in D.C. should be taken in Olympia and run Rep. Curtis out of the State house. Just because you feel guilty about consensual sex that you had, doesn't mean you can gang up on a gentle, caring 26 y/o. The 46 y/o Rep Curtis should be ashamed of himself, for not only lying to his wife and family, but for also spinning this to make Cody look like the bad guy.

Agreed. Curtis needs to go and make room for a real conservative - not a closet case.

I have to disagree with Angelo on one thing. Richard Curtis' district is not one of the most conservative in Washington. I don't know where he got that assumption.

Finally there is a Republican that listens and/or makes a smart choice (albiet late)... he resigned his seat in the State House.....

61875: That "gentle, caring 26 y/o is a WHORE. Now the spotlight is on them both. They both get what they deserve.

Small minded people...... just because someone has sex with another someone, does not make them a whore. I know the person being accused of extorting the State Rep. and I highly doubt that he would have solicited himself out. So the State Rep. wanted to pay for sex (read the police report) and also (allegedly) wanted to have unprotected sex with the 26 y/o, and from what it looks like in the report was also was willing to pay for that, it looks like to me that he is the one that should shoulder the lion's share of the blame here. So the 26 y/o maybe made some poor choices about some of his actions, but I tend to believe the 26 y/o more than I could the State Rep.... just because you are elected to office, it doesn't mean the you are automatically honest, forthright, and truthful... hell.... look what he pulled over on his constituents and his family..... FOR SHAME EX STATE REP CURTIS!!!!

Why is this even news? I thought by now that everyone knew that deep inside of every Republican resides a homosexual who is just screaming to get out. It is no secret that Republicans have inner demons deep within their jingoistic conservative closets that are far worse then any of the things they try to acuse Democrats of.

This Richard Curtis guy is just another indication of the Republican Party's ineptness... he's even a lousy crossdresser, I mean come on, lose the moustache, would you? And red pantyhose?? Please! You have to be really thin to wear those, otherwise your thighs look really fat.

I did a internship at The Congress in 1996. I never expected to see so many gay Replublicans, Washington D.C. is full of them and all of them are closet gays. Including the old man I was working for Bill Goodling of PA 19 district a young rep boy vivit him at his office at closed doors!

P.S. I am straight and Democrat! Whoa!
