Reporter Mike Lewis offers this update for the sports fans among us:
Here's one reason to briefly set aside thoughts of Mariners' futility, Sonics' mobility and Seahawks' volatility: Seattle-based Rat City Rollergirls earned a runner-up spot in the national roller derby championship this weekend. They swept through the tournament's early bouts only to come up short in the finals in Austin, Texas, Sunday night.
The Kansas City Roller Warriors defeated Rat City 89-85 in the finals, earning the Warriors a first-ever national title.

Valerie Morris, better known by her derby moniker Val Tron 3000, said the Show Me State squad simply outskated the top-ranked Rollergirls. "Quite frankly, Kansas City brought their A game," she said following the final bout. "They hit harder and skated faster. It was a great game."
While conceding that the Rat City skaters are a bit disappointed to miss a shot at repeating their 2006 national crown, Morris said simply having a another chance to compete in the nationals was a treat. "The tournament was awesome," she said. "We're still happy. We finished second. There's no better team to lose to than Kansas City."
On Saturday, the defending national champs crushed the Detroit Derby Girls 160 to 50, setting up a Sunday showdown with Texas Roller Girls, considered a co-favorite to take the title. In what players described as physical bout that kept a steady supply of skaters in the penalty box, Rat City won 89-79, setting up the final Sunday evening match with Kansas City, the fourth-ranked squad in the tournament's Western division.

Update, Oct. 5: Edited to remove an earlier, erroneous reference to the 2007 rankings that was inserted during editing of Mike's story. The Texas Rollergirls were the defending national champions.
