What's going on Monday

A sampling of events and expectations for Monday, Aug. 20:

PREVENTING AIDS: The AIDS Vaccine 2007 Conference, featuring researchers and specialists from more than 48 countries, will be hosted all week at the downtown Sheraton in Seattle. Researchers will be discussing the efforts to find an AIDS vaccine. According to conference organizers, the Seattle was chosen for the meeting because of the Pacific Northwest's international leadership in the development of an AIDS vaccine. Seattle organizations contributing to the conference include the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's HIV Vaccine Trials Network, the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, the University of Washington and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

PROTEST DU JOUR: Shoreline School District teachers and support staff plan to picket at 3:30 p.m. during a school board meeting. They are protesting what they say are cuts proposed by administrators in contract negotiations. Meeting happens at the Shoreline Center, 18560 First Ave. N.E.

PROSTATE CANCER: Virginia Mason Medical Center is hosting the 9th annual Prostate Cancer Symposium at 5:30 p.m. at the Lindeman Pavilion, 1201 Terry Ave. in Seattle.

POLICE REVIEW: The Seattle Police Accountability and Review Panel will meet to discuss the structure and processes of the city's internal review and disciplinary system at 7 p.m. at City Hall -- Bertha Knight Landes Room, 600 Fourth Ave.

FEATURED COMMENT

PictureI am more interested in the state gubernatorial race than the national one. It is almost a forgone conclusion that Obama will take this state. With the tight race for governor, every vote will count."

-- jk@SEA on New York Times: Gregoire v. Rossi 'verbatim' replay of 2004
