Walker says no... What's next?

Huskies fans shouldn't get too worked up about Dewayne Walker rejecting a job offer from Tyrone Willingham.

Ask yourself this: Why would he leave?

He's going to get the same money in LA. His son plans to play for UCLA next year. He's more secure with new coach Rick Neuheisel. He doesn't have to relocate. He knows his players and incoming recruits. He's getting to keep much of his defensive staff.

And after UCLA plays in a BCS bowl in the next couple of seasons, he'll get a Pac-10 head coaching job.

So who should Willingham turn to now?

I'm guessing it will be someone we don't know much about -- perhaps an NFL secondary coach who's dying to run his own defense.

But did anybody watch Oregon State's bowl game against Maryland? Did you see the impenetrable run defense? Or the relentless pressure? Did you see how well the Beavers backed up their pressure by blanketing the QBs' hot reads?

It was beautiful.

Mark Banker is the Pac-10's best defensive coordinator. And that includes USC's Pete Carroll.

Sure, he's attached to Mike Riley's hip, but if Willingham offered him the same money he did Walker -- reportedly a multi-year, $400,000 deal -- that would be hard for him to turn down.

And, no, I'm not Banker's agent. I think I've only talked to him once.

I am merely trying to help Willingham make a good decision.

What makes you think Willingham needs your help? How many teams have you coached?

Everette Thompson, are you reading this? Nobody wants to coach the UW defense!

Why would Banker leave a better football program in Corvallis for a one and done deal in Montlake once Willingham gets fired after another bowlless season?

Great post, Ted. So true about Banker's skill level. But, the step down in success level makes no sense. The only DC job that Banker would take in Seattle is the Seahawk's after Holmgren retires and Mora succeeds him. He would look great in a Seahawk pullover--he and Mora could then make buddy movies at that point.

Excellent point about Banker. How much are they paying him at OSU? It seems like he's pretty entrenched there. I think the only reason he would leave is for the opportunity to head coach at another school.

Banker would leave if he thought he could win a national title. The right money, guarantees and control will push him over. He will be the next UW DEF Co and everyone will be saying "some guy on the PI website said so."

I've been screaming for Banker since 11/10/07 - the day that OSU nearly decapitated Jake Locker. That was angriest, most aggressive defense I've seen in person around the Pac 10 since the UW 1991 National Championship squad...that is, until I watched USC kick the snot out of Illinois two days ago.

Schools with aggressive defenses who fly all over the field are demonstrating the way to beat the spread offense. That's a guy and a coaching philosophy I want coaching at UW, period.

He would be a good hire, did you see what his D's did against the Cougars and Ducks? Show him the Money!

It's a Nice thought But Banker and Riley are great friends and have been together for a long time. Banker gets good bucks at OSU. My question here is why the hell didn't we get Riley or Tedford from Oregon? I remember that game back in 98 or 99 when OSU the doormat since the late 60's nearly beat us and that kid Smith went Beserk at QB we would have lost that game if it wasn't for the Rcvr dropping a good pass in the endzone. Nope I see Banker staying at OSU. If you watched OSU play this year not only does banker use about 15 Defensive players he rotates them all the time. Fresh legs and happy players which makes it easier for a kid to go there if he knows he has a shot at playing. OSU just seems to reload on defense. We need to get the guys in here that are going to other schools instead of The U.

Actually, in 1998 UW was saved from defeat to Oregon State by defensive back Nigel Burton, who deflected Jonathan Smith's pass enough for Roddy Tompkins to drop it. That game began OSU's resurgence.

Interestingly, Nigel Burton now coaches the secondary at Oregon State University.

You guys keep your grimy paws off our guy!!! He's provided the best defense in the pac10 for several years now...amazing people haven't noticed earlier and more amazing we've kept him.

I figure you guys have at least 5 more years of agony to get over yourselves and become a bit more humble...if you take our guy you are forever hated:)

Go Beavs!

Banker is very good, but the basic problem facing UW right now is personnel. You just don't see it on Defensive side of the ball and with multiple weaknesses Offensive Coord. are finding it very easy to exploit.

Now a good DC will help, however, he too will need good players, I have heard Ty has been doing a pretty good job recruiting maybe help is on the way. I remember his teams at Stanford were tough and hard hitting, that is what Washington fans will need to expect until talent arrives.

Obviously as a Beaver fan I don't want Banker to leave, however I don't think it is very likely either. It makes little sense, and it isn't like UW is a better job at the moment.

I don't think UW problems are just a scheme, it is personnel and player development, who knows which is more to blame.

How many players return on defense? Are there lots of new ones comming in? Top JC or Freshman that can play?

That will help more than the "perfect" coach IMHO.

Hmmm......which would you choose:

1) Stay at a successful football program that is on it's way up and is quickly developing a reputation as one of the top 2 or 3 defenses on the west coach which will make you a likely candidate for future head coaching jobs.

Or.....

2) Accept a job with a small pay increase at a program that has finished last in the Pac-10 2 of the last 3 years and has little talent on defense for a coach that is going to be fired next season after going 5-7?

Ungrateful,impatient,lack of understanding /appreciation
Look at the complete picture of a total Athletic Program in turmoil. UW was in sub-zero condition when TW arrived and began his REbuilding process. In every area TW has made improvements to that program!!! Remember they were 1-10 with few good football players who had no will to WIN...TW is an Honorable man who STUDENT athletes RESPECT and want to GROW into their BEST under.
(TW has no shortage of players in the NFL )It took character to fire his friend (DC) but he did and now is moving forward..last year UW played 9 Bowl teams and 6 RANKED teams..STOP being so critical....LOOK at all the mistakes the so-called GREAT coaches (ncaafb / nfl )have made during recent playoff and bowl games...florida lost 4 games and got a 17 mil. payday??
TW has earned the Right to fulfill the TERMS of his contract...Knowledgeable folks know that to REbuib UW it will take at least 4-5 years. Also the average coach stays on the job 5-7 years.TW is on track...it will be better...GO DAWGS
