« What the freak... the rankings finale... | Main | Willingham wants my advice »
Three Pac-10 teams were ranked No. 2 this year and were in the running for the national title. Two imploded. One bounced back.
Winning programs do the latter. Losers do the former.
Oregon completely crumbled without its starting quarterback. Dennis Dixon would have won the Heisman if he didn't go down, and the Ducks suffered through a terrible run of injuries, but there's no way they should have lost their last three games.
If they lose to South Florida in the Sun Bowl -- and, really, who thinks they won't -- then they will match the the humiliating four-game losing streak that capped 2006.
California lost to Oregon State because its starting quarterback was out and its backup made a stupid play at the end. But the Bears had WAY too much talent to lose six of their last seven games.
They folded.
Both teams played great when they were dreaming of national and Pac-10 titles. But when adversity struck, they couldn't find the gumption to dig deep and fight back. They lacked the pride.
Or the heart.
USC, meanwhile, was embarrassed by Stanford and appeared out of the conference race when it lost at Oregon.
Yet the Trojans refocused, rolled off four consecutive wins against a rugged schedule and -- poof -- they're back in the Rose Bowl.
Further, consider Virginia Tech, LSU and Georgia.
All three suffered two disheartening defeats this year. All three showed heart and got off the canvas.
The Hokies could have gone belly-up after being humiliated at LSU. And they could have thrown up their hands after giving away a game they dominated against Boston College.
Yet here they are, playing in a BCS bowl game.
LSU lost twice in triple overtime. The Tigers operated during the latter portion of the season with rumors that coach Les Miles was bolting for Michigan. Yet they never yielded and -- lookee here! -- they're playing for the national title.
Georgia? They got embarrassed by South Carolina and destroyed by a Tennessee team that Cal bludgeoned. Yet, the Bulldogs dusted themselves off, regrouped and now will beat the pooh out of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.
When we debate conference strength -- and the SEC and the Pac-10 were in the thick of the supremacy debate much of the season -- we need to factor in heart.
This season, the SEC's elite clearly had more heart than the Pac-10's.
Heart got four teams, two from the SEC, to BCS bowl games. A lack of heart left two Pac-10 teams national jokes by season's end.
When we talk about what separates USC from the rest of the conference, the conversation will always start with talent.
But this season, it finishes with heart.
And, be forewarned: Arizona State, though it ended up in the Holiday Bowl, clearly showed heart this year. Say what you want about Dennis Erickson, but his teams almost always show grit.
---By the way: Just turned in my Heisman Trophy ballot.
1) Tebow
2) McFadden
3) Brennan
--Replaced Chase Daniel with McFadden after Missouri lost Big 12 title game. McFadden is a better player. Daniel previously got the vote because he was leading a magical season. Magic ran out.
DA LINKS...
---What's the root cause of all that befouls the Sonics... Satan.
---Some details from Tony Barnhart on the final coaches vote...
Further... per USC
--Six coaches voted USC No. 2 (Butch Davis, Dennis Franchione, Pat Hill, Jeff Tedford, Bill Doba and Tyrone Willingham)
--Howard Schnellenberger proved that he's as dumb as a box of rocks by voting USC 12th, LSU 5th, Kansas 2nd and Hawaii 3rd.
Oh, you like that... well how about him voting Missouri 4th... and Oklahoma 7th... even though the Sooners gave Missouri both its losses this season?
His vote is indefensible. He shouldn't be allowed to vote again.
---Who gets Johan? Is it the Sox?
---I don't know about you but this is what I want for Christmas... not sure I can say the same for Barry Bonds and company though.
---Here's an update on one of my favorite former Huskies, DT Larry Tripplett.
---Arizona Cardinals are beaten up. I feel horrible about that.
---JoeSportsFan isn't into Kansas any more... Turns out the Jayhawks aren't just sneaky about playing the lamest schedule in college football history.
Cheers

TEd,
Is there some reason you no longer reply to queries on your blog.
I am curious to have your input on who the candidates to replace the UW defensive coordinator and running backs should be.
