A look at the blockbusters of Summer

I'm a movie lover. Even as a pretty darn broke college student, despite high theater prices, I keep coming back for more. And it isn't just my popcorn addiction either. I love films. Some recent favorites include There Will be Blood and No Country for Old Men. But, after the Oscars have been awarded, the theaters are swamped with junk film until summertime rolls around. And this year, it looks like another summer of sequels.

One summer movie I will not be paying to see is M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening. The film comes out June 13 and stars Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel. IMDB describes it as "a paranoid thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity." In typical M. Night style, I am sure there will be bad dialogue, cameo appearances and a big twist.

If you enjoyed Judd Apatow's Superbad and Knocked Up, be sure to catch Pineapple Express in theaters Aug. 8. Seth Rogan co-stars with James Franco; Apatow himself produces. IMDB describes the plot as "a stoner and his dealer are forced to go on the run from the police after the pothead witnesses a cop commit a murder." I struggle with stoner comedies but with Apatow behind it, I'm sure Harold and Kumar will be put to shame.

Amazingly enough, Harrison Ford did not break a hip in the shooting of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But, just to ensure the over-the-hill Ford still looks macho, Spielberg has paired him up with Shia LaBeouf. The movie opens May 22. Rehashing the plot of an Indiana Jones movie is like rehashing the plot of a Bond movie. You know what to expect.

The movie I have been waiting for is finally just about here. The Dark Knight hits theaters July 18, and yes, I will be there opening night. I love Christian Bale. In my opinion, he is one of the best actors out there. He makes a pretty darn awesome Batman. Paired with the late Heath Ledger, I don't see how this movie could be wrong. Not as excited as I am? Check out this trailer. It is sure to put you in a Batman kind of mood.
