Sound off about a new viaduct interchange

Among other things, a proposed new $545-million intersection to replace part of the Alaskan Way Viaduct would permanently remove more than 1,200 parking spaces between South Holgate and King Streets and subject the neighborhood to construction work and traffic disruptions for more than four years.

In the end, it's also supposed to provide new access from Highway 99 south of downtown and permit trucks to cross under the highway to port docks.

Starting Thursday night an environmental assessment of the new intersection will be the subject of two public meetings. The first is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday (July 10) at Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave. The second will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Madison Middle School, 3429- 45th Ave. S.W.

The state plans to start building the intersection next year, although it hasn't decided how to replace the rest of the viaduct. The intersection would replace one mile of the viaduct, about 40 percent of the viaduct's length.

The assessment can be read online.

In addition to the meetings, citizens also can submit comments, which are due Aug. 11. This can be done by e-mail to southviaductEA@wsdot.wa.gov or by postal mail to the Washington Department of Transportation, Attn: Angela Freudenstein, 999 Third Ave., Suite 2424, Seattle, WA 98104

$545 million and 1200 parking spots? What the heck are they doing? This is 20-25% of the replacement cost of the viaduct. NO, IDIOTS!

In other words, the cost of retrofitting the remainder of the Viaduct will be 60% of the state's original estimate (which I suspect was jiggered up to satisfy the "highway lobby" that is bound to be opposed to any plan that doesn't involve pouring lots of concrete and cement). Even though the Retrofit option has been tossed (yet again) without a single public hearing (as far as I know), it is still the "default option" in my book (or the option that won't go away), if no consensus can be reached on any of the other options.

We might want to think long and hard about devoting too much money/time to a huge new rebuild project. Mass transit is extremely important as fossil fuels become less affordable. How about we retrofit the existing viaduct. NO TUNNEL! The seawall needs to be rebuilt but a tunnel would not be a good idea in this earthquake-liquifaction prone area. Surface street sounds nice but if you want to "connect" downtown to the waterfront (as if it somehow is not connected now?) then a surface street sounds bad too. I think the tunnel advocates are involved with the new pricey condos on the waterfront.

We should remove any and all taxation related to the viaduct and allow the people who volunteer to pay to decide how they want to spend their money.
