A Seattle agency has said four new $599-million crosstown streetcar routes appear promising enough to consider building. Critics say they cost too much. Next month (July) the city will testing support for them in the affected neighborhoods.
From an initial list of 6 possible routes the city Department of Transportation narrowed the field to four, and one evening meeting has been set on each one. Each session will be from 4 to 6 p.m.:
* Proposed Central Line, connecting King Street Station to Seattle Center via First Avenue, estimated construction cost $180 million. Forum set for Wednesday, July 2, in the Bertha Knight Landes Room, First Floor of City Hall, 600 Fourth Ave.
* Proposed Ballard-Fremont Line, connecting those two neighborhoods with Westlake Center along the west side of Lake Union and across the Fremont Bridge, $130 million. Forum Tuesday, July 8, Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th St.
* Proposed University District Line, linking Westlake Center to the district via Eastlake Avenue, the University Bridge and Northeast Campus Parkway, $179 million. Forum Wednesday, July 9, University Heights Center, 5031 University Way NE.
* Proposed First Hill Line linking Pioneer Square to First Hill via Jackson Street, Boren Avenue and Broadway, $110 million. Forum Tuesday, July 15, Yesler Community Center, 917 E. Yesler Way. This line was part of a three-county roads-and-transit ballot measure rejected by voters last fall, and it may be on a three-county ballot again.
Streetcar backers have begun campaigning for a city-wide streetcar system to expand on the South Lake Union streetcar line that opened in December. Advocates say they're an attractive way to lure travelers out of cars and promote development. Critics have said they're too expensive, get in the way of other traffic and that buses can do the job at less cost.
The city's waterfront street car line, which used restored antique cars, was closed in late 2005 because of construction of the Olympic Sculpture Park and isn't expected to run again for at least another decade. Some have suggested the Central Line could replace it.
A key question is whether neighborhood landowners will help finance construction and operation of new lines, as was done with the South Lake Union line.

These sounds like a great idea to me. So many people live along those routes. Imagine if even a fourth of those people took the streetcar into downtown instead of driving. Traffic would actually be manageable.
However, if there is not enough money, cut out the line from Westlake to the U district since the light rail will go there soon anyway.
