Scared to cross the street? Take a picture.

Kate Martin tried complaining to Seattle's transportation department about "a crazy" intersection at Greenwood Avenue North, North 105th Street and Holman Road.

The speeding drivers make crossing the streets hazardous to your health, she said.

But she got nowhere.

So when City Councilman Nick Licata urged people to take photographs of bad intersections for pedestrians for a new website, Martin took out here camera.

Hers was among nine photos, taken by seven people, Licata posted Monday on the site.

In addition to Martin's photograph, the website show photographs with complaints about no markings at stop signs or crosswalks, and stretches where drivers tend to speed.

Licata said he plans to follow up on the complaints with the Seattle Department of Transportation. SDOT had no immediate plans for fixes, and in a statement, seemed downplay Licata's efforts.

"While we appreciate the councilmember's concern for pedestrian safety, we already have a process in place for citizens to submit just such information to the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT)," said department spokesman Richard Sheridan.

He said SDOT is distributing surveys on pedestrian issues.

Citizens can get a survey by e-mailing mostwalkablecity@seattle.gov or by calling (206) 233-1084.

Licata, though, said his goal goes beyond fixing specific problems. By posting the photos and the complaints, Licata said he wants people concerned about pedestrian issues to know "they're not alone."

Licata also wants the effort to spur more people clamor for a pedestrian friendly city. He'll forward the complaints to the neighborhood associations in the areas to encourage the groups to work for pedestrian improvements.

To submit entries to Licata's website:

  • Email your digital photos to Licata's legislative aide, Frank Video, at frank.video@seattle.gov. Type, "Critical Crossings," in the subject line;

  • Include comments about each intersection you submit;

  • In your message, indicate if you want to post your email address or name next to your photo so others can contact you;

  • Submit images in JPG or GIF format. The image should be 640 x 480 pixels or larger. To insure quality, images smaller then 640 x 480 pixels will not be posted;

  • The intersections will be catalogued and posted on the site. New photos will be added each month along with comments on photos received from website visitors.

    What about pedestrians worrying about pedestrian's safety. Some people seem to think anyplace is ok for them to cross the street which makes drivers forget about where the crosswaks are and where people supposed to be crossing at crosswalks.

    Do you stop for Jaywalkers and possibly cause a accident or just those pedestrians in legitimate crosswalks?

    Are drivers also supposed to stop for pedestrians who cross the street on red lights making motorists have to stop for green lights? Seen it happen many times in Seattle.

    Mostly those pedestrians are probably drunk, Fine Details.

    But seriously, most pedestrians DO worry about their own safety. But defensive walking isn't enough: look at the pedestrian death stats for this town! Horrible! It is the City's job to clearly mark crosswalks, time lights, and provide freaking SIDEWALKS and curbs on major arterials so pedestrians can actually walk somewhere in this town without taking their life into their hands. Greenwood Ave N is particularly bad, with pell-mell parking, loooong stretches without crosswalks/lights, and speeding drivers. It basically sucks. Shocker, people don't want to take the bus if it means walking six blocks on that road to get home.

    To quote my father, who is a policeman and very courteous driver, "Pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way." Because if you hit them, you will feel awful, you might go to jail, and you will probably get your pants sued off. That includes jaywalkers, little old ladies, and law-abiding citizens. Our job as a drivers is to focus on driving, get off the damn phone, slow down a little, and stop BEFORE we are halfway into the intersection so that people can cross in safety and others can SEE THEM. The supersized trucks and SUVs have only made pedestrian visibility worse at intersections. Please, let's be careful out there!

    In my 8 years as a walker, Cab drivers are the worse. They look straight ahead and drive thru crosswalks that are clearly marked.
